Department of Orthopedic Surgery
As a leader in orthopedic surgery, musculoskeletal services and direct patient care in South Carolina, Prisma Health Orthopedics plays a major role in academics, research, advocacy and community engagement. We are also fortunate to have several physicians involved in leadership positions in local, regional and national organizations that advance patient care, education and research.
Chair’s welcome
I am honored, as the Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Chair of Prisma Health Orthopedics – Midlands, to introduce you to our Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. I am incredibly proud of our residency program. We are a program that graduates residents that can leave here and succeed in any manner of orthopedic practice or excel in any subspecialty fellowship. Our strength comes from our varied clinical rotations with very early entry into the operating room with 1:1 interaction with our surgeons. Yet, more important than that, is the strength of our culture. We have great residents who care for each other, respect each other and respect the importance of their educational mission as soon they will be going out on their own to take care of our most vulnerable patients.
Our program is also made strong through the leadership of Dr. Gregory Grabowski, our Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs and our Residency Director. Dr. Grabowski has fostered a culture of care, compassion and pursuit of excellence in clinical care that has served this program very well. Dr. Grabowski expounds often on the five core values of our residency program that we embrace and honor. These include:
- Producing well-rounded physicians
- Providing a robust surgical experience
- Facilitating life-long learning
- Promoting professionalism
- Providing a breadth of clinical settings and educational opportunities to prepare graduates regardless of their career paths
We have over the last several years increased our yearly cohort of residents from two to now four. We have been educating residents in Orthopedic Surgery in the Columbia region for over seventy-five years. Given our department culture, the quality of our residents, the diversity and dedication of our teaching physicians and the needed expansion of our program, I believe we are as good as we have ever been at turning out great physicians and great surgeons as at any time in these last seventy-five years. Thank you for exploring our residency program and the great residents and teachers that make it excel.
