Clinical Programs

The Prisma Health Midlands/University of South Carolina Orthopedic Surgery residency program is proud to offer a broad spectrum of exposure to all subspecialties within the field of orthopedic surgery.

Additionally, residents have exposure to a “general orthopedics” rotation, providing an opportunity to experience full-spectrum, community orthopedic care.

Arthroplasty

The total joint service exposes residents and students to a wide range of arthroplasty procedures. Our division performs more than 1,000 cases per year, including primary and revision surgeries. Residents are exposed to a broad range of techniques and technologies while treating congenital abnormalities, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthropathies, infections and traumatic conditions. Trainees experience the breadth of pathologies encountered in adult reconstructive practice.

Foot and Ankle

Residents experience a full spectrum of elective foot and ankle surgery spanning minimally invasive techniques, total ankle replacements, ankle arthroscopy and sports-related injuries as well as complex adult deformity reconstructions.

In our service there is a strong focus on research providing the residents with multiple research opportunities. Our residents commonly present at local and national conferences with research focused on foot and ankle surgery. Our team also serves as the foot and ankle consultants for the University of South Carolina Department of Athletics. The orthopedic foot and ankle team accounts for approximately 900 foot and ankle procedures per year, providing a robust and wide-ranging experience for learners on the service.

General Orthopedics

Residents rotate through our general orthopedics rotation during their PGY3 and PGY5 years. Both attending surgeons have busy general practices with significant resident exposure to arthroscopy, arthroplasty and fracture care.

Surgeries are performed in all clinical settings, including ambulatory surgery centers. Resident autonomy is maximized, and the rotation remains one of the most popular among the resident complement.

Oncology

The orthopedic oncology rotation entails monthly didactic lectures as well as exposure to a four-week rotation. During this rotation, residents are involved in the work-up and surgical care of patients with bone sarcoma, soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic bone disease and benign bone/soft tissue conditions. Further, they have the ability to interact in Sarcoma Board and other multidisciplinary meetings.

Typically, due to the nature of soft tissue and bone sarcoma resections, they are also exposed to the subsequent necessary reconstructions (arthroplasty, fixation and others).

Pediatrics

The pediatric service is comprised of four attendings with an expansive array of expertise. The residents are exposed to everything from neuromuscular scoliosis to complex limb deformity correction to pediatric sports reconstruction and everything in between.

The service is a high-volume surgical experience allowing for that critical one-on-one operative experience for the learner. Operative time is usually spent at the Children’s Hospital on the Richland campus with multiple satellite outpatient locations. The pediatric group takes the only pediatric-specific call in the state of South Carolina.

Spine

Residents are exposed to a full spectrum of elective spine surgery, from minimally invasive techniques to adult deformity reconstructions. Our team also serves as the spine consultants for the University of South Carolina Department of Athletics, while spine trauma experience as well as tumor workup and interventions occur through Prisma Health Richland.

The orthopedic spine team accounts for approximately 1,000 spine surgical procedures per year, providing a robust and wide-ranging experience for learners on the service.

Sports Medicine

Orthopedic residents are exposed to the orthopedic sports medicine service throughout their residency experience. The sports medicine service at Prisma Health offers a dynamic experience with six orthopedic sports medicine physicians and two physicians trained in primary care sports medicine.

Residents are exposed to a tremendous variety of both non operative and operative management of athletic injuries. Surgical exposure includes arthroscopic and open surgical cases involving athletic injuries to the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow and foot and ankle. The sports medicine service at Prisma Health also maintains one of the largest athletic outreach programs in the United States caring for over 38,000 student athletes, including over 40 high schools, two professional ballet companies, Minor league Baseball and eight local colleges including the University of South Carolina.

Orthopedic residents are encouraged to participate in and are incorporated into team coverage when available.

Trauma

The orthopedic trauma service functions at the Level 1 trauma center in our hospital system. Residents are exposed to the full spectrum of trauma ranging from "hot" trauma including acutely polytraumatized patients to "cold" trauma such as nonunion repair and deformity correction.

Approximately 1,500 surgical procedures are performed by the trauma service, providing significant learning opportunities for residents on service.

Upper Extremity

Residents are exposed to the full spectrum of upper extremity surgery during their rotations with our providers. This includes degenerative conditions, tumor surgery, neurologic extremity procedures and extremity trauma care ranging from the shoulder to the hand.

Soft tissue coverage for traumatic injuries associated with tissue loss is performed by the orthopedic hand service and in conjunction with the plastic surgery service. Rotating with one of the team physicians for the University of South Carolina and providing athletic care throughout the central portion of the state, residents learn the unique management priorities for athletes at the junior level through professional sports teams.
