the app pulmonary fellowship program at
0:18
Prisma health is really the first of its
0:20
kind at Prisma Health in the Department
0:21
of Medicine our fellow gets a wide
0:24
variety of learning experiences they
0:26
have a slower onboarding period to allow
0:29
for more time for learning they aren't
0:30
expected to see a full patient panel
0:32
immediately they get to onboard a bit
0:35
slower so they have more time to
0:36
collaborate with our physicians learn
0:39
different disease processes in a
0:40
stepwise manner that's not overwhelming
0:43
to them they also get weekly dedicated
0:45
lectures for them we pick a variety of
0:47
different topics each week is something
0:49
different whether it be asthma COPD
0:52
interstitial lung disease or further
0:54
into the fellowship year more
0:56
complicated topics like sarcoidosis or
0:58
bronchiectasis some things that you
1:00
really wouldn't see in your training as
1:03
an advanced practice provider in
1:04
schooling they also get exposure to a
1:07
lot of different Specialties within
1:08
Prisma health so they're getting to
1:10
partner with our colleagues in oncology
1:12
or thoracic surgery or thoracic
1:15
radiology and spend the day with them
1:17
and learn from those Specialists on how
1:21
they view pulmonary medicine and that
1:23
really helps our fellows get a
1:24
well-rounded experience of what they're
1:26
seeing in a clinical setting and be able
1:28
to help educate their patients better
1:30
because they understand it from multiple
1:32
different Specialties the fellowship
1:34
allows them to have more time to be able
1:36
to have those awesome experiences that
1:39
really make them a much more
1:40
well-rounded provider the key elements
1:43
of our fellowship training program are
1:45
to fill in those gaps in education
1:47
within our specialty that we're not
1:49
provided when position assistance and
1:51
nurse practitioners were going through
1:53
their Master's programs we want our
1:55
patients to know that when they come
1:57
into our offices to be seen and a
1:59
mid-level provider comes in to provide
2:01
their care that they are providing the
2:03
same care that myself or one of my
2:05
colleagues would provide to those
2:06
patients because they have completed
2:08
this training program under our
2:10
Direction
2:11
initially they'll be following our
2:13
physicians and getting a look at what
2:15
their day-to-day looks like then other
2:17
days they'll be working with different
2:18
Specialties to see what their workload
2:22
looks like as well I would say 50
2:24
percent initially is going to be in the
2:26
clinic and then 50 will be focusing on
2:29
education as the year progresses their
2:31
Clinic time will increase but we still
2:34
want them to continue focusing on
2:37
lectures and still learning and our goal
2:40
is by the end of the fellowship if we've
2:42
laid out these building blocks then
2:44
they'll feel comfortable when it is time
2:46
for them to be the sole provider and
2:48
seeing patients with many different
2:50
diseases and diagnoses
2:53
the initial thing that actually drew me
2:55
to this program I was very interested in
2:58
how much they focus on the education
3:01
portion I knew as starting the role as a
3:04
provider it came with a lot of
3:05
responsibility so it was important to me
3:07
that I would be supported as a new
3:09
provider working here has really been an
3:12
incredible experience so far truly
3:14
because this patient population is very
3:17
complex so although we are pulmonary
3:19
it's not to say that we don't manage
3:21
other diseases because they all are
3:24
important in caring for one particular
3:26
patient so we actually see different
3:28
patients for many different reasons we
3:31
can manage acute and chronic issues a
3:35
big program we are also involved in is
3:37
the lung cancer screening program we
3:39
work with a specific population and
3:42
enrolling them in that program and
3:44
basically tracking them over the course
3:46
of a period of time if I had to give
3:49
advice to another fellow I truly highly
3:52
recommend this program I have felt so
3:55
supported and everyone has been really
3:57
patient with me allowing me to learn and
4:00
always willing to teach and I truly feel
4:03
like I've been set up for Success
4:04
because they're so great to work with
4:06
and they're always there for me to
4:08
answer any questions I have
4:10
we're looking for Fellowship candidates
4:12
that are eager and motivated to learn
4:15
because we're going to teach you so much
4:18
in this fellowship program and it really
4:20
is you get out of it what you put into
4:22
it we want our fellowship candidates to
4:25
want to learn about all the different
4:27
diseases in the pulmonary world we want
4:30
them to expand their education we don't
4:32
just want it to stop at work we want
4:35
them to continue to learn in this field
4:38
because in pulmonary things change every
4:41
day and this will set them up for
4:43
success in the future when they're being
4:46
the Sole Provider caring for these
4:48
patients so we're looking for candidates
4:50
that want to go above and beyond
