Mission

It is the mission of the Prisma Health Orthopedics Athletic Training Residency Program is to provide a multifaceted learning experience in musculoskeletal evaluation, and diagnosis of orthopedic injuries in order to lead in a variety of clinical, surgical and educational settings.

Goals

• Expand the athletic trainer’s knowledge in musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis in orthopedics.
• Expose athletic trainer to evidence-based medicine in musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis.
• Expand the athletic trainer’s knowledge of various aspects of the perioperative setting.

Outcomes

• The resident will demonstrate advanced knowledge in the area of musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis in the orthopedic practice setting.  
• The resident will attend program-assigned didactic learning sessions in the area of musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis.
• The resident will obtain a position as an athletic trainer in the physician practice setting.
• The resident will submit interdisciplinary scholarly research studies for publication or presentation at the state, district or national level.

Objectives

• Provide a 12-month program specific to musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis.
• Provide the athletic training resident didactic opportunities in musculoskeletal diagnosis and evaluation in an orthopedic setting.
• Enhance athletic training resident's knowledge in musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis through mentor-based opportunities in the areas of surgery and radiology.
• Provide the athletic training resident scholarly experiences thru didactic and clinic opportunities in musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis.

Opportunities provided

The Prisma Health Orthopedics Athletic Training Residency Program will provide athletic trainers the ability to participate in journal club meetings and other research and educational meetings. These meetings will advance the knowledge base of the athletic training profession. The athletic trainer will be able to work side-by-side with physicians and be able to perform scientific and clinic evaluations. They will also be able to treat sports medicine and other complex injuries under physician supervision. The residency program will allow the athletic trainers to work in a variety of clinical settings such as radiology in order to obtain a better understanding of radiographic images and studies. Other clinical settings will include bracing and casting, as well as trauma call experience in the emergency room. Finally, the athletic trainers will be able to scrub, prep and drape patients and assist during surgery.

Athletic training resident expectations

The Athletic Training Residency Program will also require the athletic trainers to provide world-class orthopedic care to patients as athletic trainers in both clinical settings and surgery. Athletic trainers will be required to abide by the highest of professionalism during the residency and have a strong desire to learn and grow within the field of sports medicine.
