Curriculum

Enrollment in the Medical Laboratory Science program is kept small in order to allow for personal instruction with each student, which enables us to provide the best available medical laboratory training. 

Upon completion of the program:

• Students will be awarded a certificate in medical laboratory science
• Students will have entry-level competencies of a medical laboratory scientist
• Students will be eligible to take national certification exams from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

Graduation is not contingent on passing any national certification exam.

Courses

• Laboratory Systems #100 (2.0)
  Introductory principles of hospital and lab safety, phlebotomy, lab techniques including microscopy, lab math, quality assessment/quality control, while also gaining basic knowledge of laboratory departments.
• Laboratory Management / Education #300 (2.0)
  An overview of the basic concepts utilized in management and education with special emphasis on the clinical laboratory
• Immunology #530 (4.0)
  A study of the principles and procedures of laboratory investigation of the immune system, including cells and related tissues, as it relates to the diagnosis of disease
• Immunohematology (Blood Bank) #540 (6.0)
  Immunohematologic principles and their application to the preparation and administration of whole blood and blood components including the selection and processing of donors, cross-matching procedures, and antibody identification. Application of the basic principles and technical procedures involved in performing blood types, crossmatch, antibody identification, and other techniques necessary.
• Hematology, Coagulation and Urinalysis #550 (6.0)
  The study of pathology and physiology of the formed elements of blood with an emphasis on clinical correlation as well as the principles of hemostasis and blood coagulation. Qualitative and quantitative study of the physical and microscopic constituents of urine and other body fluids.
• Microbiology #560 (6.0)
  Instruction of the student in the fundamental principles and techniques of diagnostic microbiology as they relate to the cultivation, microscopic examination, and biochemical activities of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast, and fungi. Additionally, the study of clinically significant parasites of man including morphology, life cycles (including the infective and diagnostic stage) and identification.
• Clinical Chemistry #525 (6.0)
  A study of the chemistry of human biological fluids and their roles in metabolism.  Special emphasis is given to principles and methods utilized in investigation of these compounds.
• Special Procedures #200 (2.0)
  This enrichment opportunity will expose the students to special laboratory procedures in the areas of molecular diagnostics and flow cytometry.

Outcomes

*Graduates who seek employment in the field or continue their education within one year of graduation.

The NAACLS accreditation benchmarks are an average certification exam pass rate of 75%, graduation rate of 70%, and placement rate of 70% for the last three active program years.
