Prehospital Education
Prisma Health Prehospital Education department is dedicated to providing exceptional prehospital emergency care educational experiences at an affordable cost across the Upstate region of South Carolina.
Faculty members offer a combination of didactic and experiential education in a state-of-the-art environment, based primarily in the Prisma Health Simulation Center. EMS courses combine evidence-based medicine and best practice methods along with classroom instruction, simulation experiences, and field offerings to ensure that graduates are fully prepared for the workplace upon completion of each program.
Courses
Emergency Medical Technician Course
Our department currently offers the South Carolina DHEC approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. Course offerings utilize a variety of proven instructional techniques. The EMT course is designed to educate the student to recognize and treat a variety of medical and traumatic emergencies. These skills include, but are not limited to:
- Oxygen therapy
- Placement of basic and advanced airways
- Application of a variety of splints
- Management of uncontrolled bleeding
- Many other treatment modalities
An additional 24 hours of EMS internship is required of the students, which consists of students riding and performing skills with Prisma Health Ambulance Service. Applicants must possess a high school diploma/GED or be a high school senior.
Community Paramedic Course
This course provides training to build on current knowledge as a paramedic to operate in expanded roles by assisting with public health, primary healthcare, and preventive services to underserved populations in the community. The goal is to create healthy communities, enhance the patient experience, and reduce healthcare costs by placing emphasis on system navigation that integrates existing services and resources, delivering care through sophisticated technology, communications and health informatics.
This course is taught in a virtual format. Once the didactic portion is complete, the students must then complete internship hours in various clinical settings. Applicants must possess a current NRP certification.
