Overview

The Prisma Health Hospitalist Fellowship in the Upstate is a new program starting in 2023 designed to provide additional training in hospital and critical care medicine for internal and family medicine graduates.

We are currently accepting two fellows per year.

About Prisma Health and Greenville

Prisma Health is the largest nonprofit health organization in South Carolina and was formed by the merging of Palmetto Health and the Greenville Health System in November 2017.

Prisma Health functions as both a safety net hospital and tertiary referral center, providing our residents and fellows with broad training opportunities to serve a diverse patient population.  Our research focus is unique in that we collaborate with three major universities (University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and Furman University) to form the Health Sciences Center.  We are working together to pave the way for breakthroughs in healthcare delivery, access and affordability while always keeping the best interests of our patients at the center.

In 2012, our hospital system opened its doors to one of the newest medical schools in the United States, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville. This innovative four-year allopathic medical school now provides even more opportunities for our residents and fellows to be immersed in a strong, supportive academic and clinical teaching environment.

Greenville is a wonderful place to both live and work. With plenty on offer for those interested in accessible outdoor recreation, the arts, excellent restaurants, community engagement, comedy, a walkable downtown, local food or just about anything else, you will not be disappointed.

Hospitalist Fellowship

The University Medical Group (UMG) hospitalists in the Upstate are an experienced group of over 100 physicians and 25 advanced practice providers, caring for patients in seven acute care hospitals, one long term acute care hospital, hospitalization at home program and transitional care clinic. The hospitalists are involved in several hospital processes including division and group leadership, patient safety, medical education, informatics, process development and guideline implementation. Members of the group are active in the Society of Hospital Medicine and American College of Physicians, with some holding leadership positions.

Fellows will gain invaluable experience working in a Level I Trauma Center, mid-size community hospitals and rural hospitals. Formal procedural training will be provided early on, and you will be able to hone these skills throughout the year. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) will be a longitudinal experience as well.

Our fellows have the opportunity to interact with residents, medical students, nursing and ancillary staff students. Our goal is to train physicians who will provide excellent care to patients, become leaders in quality and safety and teach future generations of hospitalists.  The Hospitalist fellowship program at Prisma Health provides graduates with the experience and clinical qualifications that many hospitalist programs require.
