PGY1 Pharmacy Residency (Ambulatory Care) Greenville - Director's Welcome
Welcome from the director
Thank you for your interest in our PGY1 pharmacy residency program in the ambulatory care setting! I’m honored you are considering this program, and I believe we have a competitive program to offer you. When looking for a program, I know you will consider the clinical opportunities, the people you would work with, and the location among other factors, so I’d like to introduce myself and my team.
I knew early on in my career that I loved connecting directly with patients and creating longitudinal relationships. Therefore, I was excited to secure a full-time ambulatory care position with Prisma Health directly after a PGY1 residency. I also have experience working on the weekends in inpatient and community pharmacy spaces, which has tremendously helped me understand the patient journey and gain a global perspective. This perspective is why my group and I have designed our program with a variety of opportunities while still focusing on the ambulatory care setting. On the administrative side, I have a graduate certificate in project management which has supported the launch of new ambulatory care services.
When I first started with Prisma Health, our team focused on successful warfarin management clinics across the Upstate of South Carolina. Through these initial services, we created a strong foundation in our community and then expanded to other disease states and clinic types so we could reach more patients. The need is there! Yet, it is not easy starting a new service, and my colleagues (your future preceptors) have that fresh perspective on what it takes to start a new clinic or service.
I decided to step up as the residency program director because:
- I have a passion for building-up others through mentorship, teaching, and leadership opportunities
- I like sharing my excitement for Ambulatory Care where we build long-term patient and colleague relationships
- I enjoy the administrative side of organizing and managing a residency program
Although the residency year is vigorous, I believe in a healthy amount of work life balance where the resident is challenged to set new expectations and boundaries but not to a breaking point. Lastly, my teaching style minimizes the modeling phase, and I challenge residents to spend most of their time in the coaching and facilitation phases, so they get as close to independence as possible. The physicians we work with thoroughly enjoy having pharmacy residents and foster a similar teaching style where they lean on you.
Outside of pharmacy, I love to get outside, so you will often see me walking around the campus during lunch! I also enjoy being a swim coach for the Special Olympics and spending time with family and friends.
I wish you the best in your pharmacy journey, and my colleagues and I look forward to meeting you!
