Curriculum

Required one-month learning experiences (pick one within each category)

  • Orientation to Pharmacy Operations
  • Resident Clinic (Family Medicine Clinic or Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinic)
  • Cardiology (Heart Failure/LVAD Clinic or Cardiology Outpatient Clinic)
  • Primary Care Practices
  • Pharmacy Support Services (Medication Safety/Regulatory, Formulary Management and Supply Chain, Informatics and Change Management, Ambulatory Administration, Acute Care Clinical Administration, Support Services Administration, or Value-Based Care and Population Health)
  • Geriatrics (Ambulatory Geriatrics or Prisma Health SeniorCare)
  • Inpatient Medicine (Family Medicine Teaching Service, Internal Medicine Teaching Service, or Geriatrics)
  • Inpatient Cardiology (Cardiology Teaching Service or Cardiology (Heart Failure))
  • December Project Month

Elective learning experiences

  • Academia (50% clinical in primary care)
  • Administration
  • Ambulatory Stewardship & ID Transitions of Care
  • Electrophysiology (Inpt/Outpt NP preceptor)
  • Endocrinology and Allergy Ambulatory Practice
  • Global Health (medical mission trip month TBD annually)
  • Immunology Center – ID Clinic
  • Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

*No more than one third of the residency year can be concentrated in one clinical area.

Required longitudinal experiences

  • Education and presentations (Grand Rounds, Pharmacy Case Conference)
  • Leadership & Practice Management and Residency Leadership Academy
  • Clinical Teaching Certificate Program
  • Complete drug monograph for formulary review
  • Major research project: SERC presentation and Discover USC poster presentation
  • Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) completed and poster presentation at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
  • Patient care continuity physician consults
  • Staffing in the outpatient pharmacy (retail dispensing and Meds2Beds)

Other requirements

  • Must obtain SC Pharmacist License within 120 days of start of residency
  • Preceptor pharmacy students
  • Participate in South Carolina Society of Health-System Pharmacists
