Standardized Patient Program FAQ

• Possess high school diploma or equivalent
• Bilingual abilities are a plus
• Ability to read, memorize lines and understand intent of scenarios
• Demonstrate ability and willingness to work professionally with learners, faculty, and administrators

• Consistently simulate a patient in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner

• No formal training or previous experience is necessary
• SPs generally have an interest in education and/or personal health

• Excellent communicators
• Reliable and punctual
• Enthusiastic and passionate about healthcare education
• Accountable

• Correspond via email, manage Google calendar invites, navigate scheduling software
• Portray patient in clinical scenarios being utilized in teaching and/or assessment activities
• Simulate all aspects of scenarios, using history of a current problem, in a standardized and accurate manner
• Participate in mock interviews, counseling and/or physical examinations
• Provide feedback to learners in a constructive manner
• Use ongoing feedback from RN Simulation Specialist and incorporate it into future case simulations
• Complete assessment checklists accurately and consistently per training
• Perform related duties as assigned

To ensure that learners interact with a diverse group of “patients” within a clinical setting, we recruit both males and females, 18 years of age and older, of all ethnicities and cultures.

• You will undergo extensive training which varies according to the type of case/scenario you are portraying
• Some SPs are asked to work with learners who are practicing a certain skill
• Others are involved in exams to evaluate how well learners have learned skills
• The training may be one-on-one or in a group setting. The goal of the training session is to ensure that you have a thorough knowledge of the case and that all SPs portray the case in a “standardized” way
• Individual training sessions are usually no more than two hours

• Varies based on role being played
• SPs typically wear hospital gowns with undergarments
• Men wear gym shorts, and women wear bras and gym shorts

• Listen to the heart and lungs with a stethoscope
• Visualize inside the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth
• Obtain vital signs
• Check reflexes
• Complete abdominal exam
• Intimate exams are not performed: No Pelvic, Breast, Genital or Rectal Exams

• Training involves one to three-hour sessions depending on the scenario and usually occurs in the Clinical Skills Center
• A performance event can last one to eight hours
• All training and performances (with a few exceptions) take place Monday through Friday during regular work hours
• SP usage is on an as-needed basis and is dependent on the age, gender, and body build of the patient being portrayed as well as the experience of the Standardized Patient

• All time spent training in the center and during a performance is paid time
• There is an expectation that some work will be done at home as well
• The hourly rate for training and performances is $20/hr
• The hourly rate for modeling is $20/hr
