Internship Examples
One of the challenges in developing an internship is determining how to create a meaningful experience that benefits both the department and the intern. We’ve provided some recent examples of internships below.
These have been selected for a variety of reasons, including their well-defined learning outcomes and their unique projects.
Great places to identify possible projects for interns are professional development conference agendas, core competencies of your profession, and reviewing department HCAHPS scores.
Children’s Advocacy
A Safe Kids intern will be an integral part of the Safe Kids team. The intern will receive training in the latest safety education techniques and have opportunities to work with the community at large (day camps, development centers, health fairs) and specifically school-aged children. The intern will be invited to attend coalition and development council meetings and will assist with the documentation and reporting of data for evidence-based outcome studies.
Deputy General Counsel
The Deputy General Counsel Internship equips students with knowledge and experience relative to legislation and regulation governing a major healthcare system. Interns will have the opportunity to research a variety of health care law issues, review documents and provide comments, review policies and procedures, attend various system meetings, and work on projects in which they will learn the workings of an academic health system and in-house counsel office.
Office of Philanthropy and Partnership
Students will gain knowledge in non-profit management, fundraising, marketing, public relations, and event planning/management.
Child Life Art Therapy
Interns will explore the field of art therapy by providing hands-on activities to children and families in the healthcare setting.
Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship
The CIOS internship position allows students to gain experience and knowledge in an integrative oncology setting. In addition to witnessing patient-provider interaction, the intern will have opportunities to assist with the development of patient education materials, data management and data trending (e.g., RedCaps, MS Access, MS Excel), research and screening patients, philanthropy, survivor programming as well as participation in meetings.
Cardiology Administration
Plan, develop and implement a concierges program for the invasive cardiology procedural areas around customer service and HCAHPS scores.
Clinical Integration
Intern will assist with organizational and educational activities for healthcare workers. With guidance and supervision, interns will have the opportunity to advance knowledge and understanding through the following:
- Assisting in epidemiological research and studies
- Understanding how to collect, analyze, and provide infection data to the staff and public
- Programming addressing infection risk assessment, prevention, and control strategies
- Gain training on evidence-based infection control practices
