Visiting Medical Students – Greenville
Thank you for considering Prisma Health/University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine Greenville for your visiting medical student rotation.
For Columbia rotations, see Visiting Medical Students – Columbia.
How to apply
Please visit Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) to apply for all visiting rotations.
- The 2025-2026 elective catalog will be available for viewing beginning February 14, 2025
- Applications will open on March 18, 2025
- Application decisions will start the week of April 7, 2025
- We respectfully request that all interested candidates submit their applications before June 1st, 2025. Earlier applications are strongly encouraged as space is limited and rotations tend to fill early for the year.
- PLEASE READ: All interested candidates must apply through VSLO. The departments have requested that applicants refrain from calling/emailing regarding their interest in a rotation. Applicants may instead communicate their interest through the aforementioned Letter of Interest which is part of their VSLO application at Prisma Health Upstate/USCSOMG.
Visiting students who are unable to attend an approved elective are responsible for notifying MedicalEducation@greenvillemed.sc.edu regarding cancellation at least six weeks before the rotation begins. Upon elective acceptance, additional information will be emailed to you regarding student onboarding and clearance requirements.
- For medical student policies and procedures, such as student mistreatment, radiation safety, exposure to blood borne pathogens, etc., visit University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville Policies & Procedures.
Eligibility
Prisma Health only accepts fourth-year visiting medical students from U.S. medical schools fully accredited by the LCME or COCA. Visiting students must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing as a candidate for the MD or DO degree at their home institution and must have completed all required core rotations prior to initiating elective work at Prisma Health.
Visiting students also must:
- Have liability insurance
- Have health insurance
- Have and submit a complete immunization record
- Have passed a criminal background check
- Provide proof of passing USMLE Step 1 and/or the COMLEX equivalent
- Provide a Letter of Recommendation for your intended specialty, written by a medical school faculty member or attending-level physician
- Provide a Letter of Interest that should answer the question, “Why do you want to rotate with us?” (No greater than 300 words). This is not a “personal statement” of why you want to go into your particular specialty, such as what you would include with a residency application. Instead, this should articulate the reason(s) why you want to be here at Prisma Health–Upstate.
- Visiting medical students will pay a fee of $175 for each rotation they accept from Prisma/USCSOMG.
- Upon acceptance, each visiting medical student must complete all onboarding requirements, including Learning Hub modules, supplying up-to-date contact information and a Social Security number (required for gaining access to the Prisma electronic health record), providing any additional immunizations, and/or establishing an affiliation agreement (if one is not already in place). Rotation offers can be rescinded if a visiting medical student fails to complete the post-acceptance requirements in a timely manner.
