Developing expertise in emergency medicine ultrasound
The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship Program has been a leader in emergency ultrasound since 1997. Residents in our emergency medicine program are trained in the use of ultrasound to facilitate the diagnosis and management of a wide variety of serious and life-threatening pathologies.
In addition to the traditional track of our ultrasound fellowship, we also have a unique fellowship opportunity focusing on the distinctive skills needed to integrate an ultrasound program into the International Emergency Medicine (IEM) environment. This fellowship is one of only a handful available in the country providing fellows with the necessary skills needed to practice in this environment.
Our fellowship has been accredited by the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council since 2021. Graduating fellows will have the opportunity to sit for the Focused Practice Designation in Advanced EM Ultrasonography ofered by the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Additionally, we have been certified by the American College of Emergency Physicians' Clinical Ultrasound Accreditation Program.
The mission of our program is to develop highly motivated emergency physicians into future educators and researchers with expertise in the wide application of ultrasound technology to direct patient care. Upon completion of training, the fellow will receive a certificate of fellowship training from Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina.
To achieve these goals, we offer the following:
- State-of-the-art advanced facilities.
- Dedicated support on the department, hospital and university levels.
- 10+ ultrasound systems (Sonosite X-portes, Sonosite SIIs, Terason, Lumify, Butterfly).
- Linear, phased, curved linear, endocavitary and TEE probes in the ED with Trophon in the department.
- Nerve block kits and block needles for infusion.
- Nationally recognized leaders in emergency ultrasound.
- Great compensation and benefits.
- $10K for continuing medical education and travel.
- Global Health Ultrasound track for those interested in international POCUS
There are opportunities for travel with national and international exposure to other leaders in emergency ultrasound. Past course locations include 40+ states, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Austria, China, Costa Rica and Mexico. Our program is affiliated with One World Health and their program in Uganda and other ongoing efforts.
This fellowship is only open to graduates of an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency.
