Wide-ranging experiences and training
Fellows with the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship gain valuable experience in providing consultation to a variety of schools and community agencies such as the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (SCDJJ), Prisma Health Children’s Hospital and the Richland Two School District.
Special areas of emphasis and expertise in our program include:
- Treatment of anxiety, PTSD, mood disorders and ADHD.
- Treating patients with autism spectrum disorders.
- Using therapy interventions such as CBT, family therapy, supportive therapy, PCIT, and play therapy.
- Balancing therapy and psychopharmacology in the treatment of patients.
- Utilization of multidisciplinary teams.
- Working in forensic settings and obtaining certification in ChildFirst.
- Multiple consultative experiences.
Teaching is a major emphasis of our department. In the first year, the rich didactic curriculum includes seminars on psychopharmacology, developmental, substance, neurology, therapeutic and psychopathology. A two-year therapeutic intervention seminar teaches all major treatment modalities important for child psychiatrists.
During the second year, seminar topics include advanced seminar therapeutic, developmental, forensic, C/L, Community consultation/community-based systems of care, spiritual/cultural/wellness, and business of medicine. Case conferences, grand rounds, and journal clubs round out the didactic program.
To ensure our fellows progress on schedule, they are evaluated at the completion of a rotation with semi-annual written milestones and clinical skills evaluations (CSE). Graduates of our program consistently perform well on their general and child psychiatry board exams.
