Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Greenville - Didactic Lectures
Fellows will have didactic lectures for 4-5 hours weekly throughout their fellowship. The didactic curriculum is a 2-year rolling curriculum that includes 17 lecture series. The didactic lectures are taught by core and adjunct faculty as well as outside guest lecturers from other institutions or other departments.
Series | Description |
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Core Curriculum Series | This course will include an overview of basic topics in child & adolescent psychiatry including normal child development, diagnoses, psychopathology, psychopharmacology, developmental disorders, forensics, evidence-based practice, and system utilization and practice. The course curriculum will follow Dulcan’s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as the ABPN child and adolescent psychiatry core competencies outline. |
Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Series | Multiple psychotherapeutic techniques and frameworks will be discussed including overviews and skill building of the following: cognitive and behavioral therapy, trauma-focused cognitive and behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, play therapy, neuro-sequential model of therapeutics, family therapy, motivational interviewing, school-based interventions, behavioral parent training, support groups, psychoeducation, and other topics. The course curriculum will follow Dulcan’s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as the ABPN child and adolescent psychiatry core competencies outline. |
Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology Series | This course will include an in-depth look at psychotropic medications that are prescribed to children and adolescents. Topics such as pharmacology, drug-drug interactions, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and neurobiology will be discussed. The course will also follow Dulcan’s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as other psychopharmacology resources. |
American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) Practice Parameter Jeopardy Series | Fellows will be required to review the AACAP Practice Parameters for various topics. These parameters will be reviewed by using a jeopardy-like format to help aid in knowledge retention. This course will build upon the content that is discussed in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Core Curriculum Series and the Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology Series. |
Experiential Learning Series | Fellows will visit various treatment centers within the community to have “hands on” learning that is not offered on campus. Examples include observation at a therapeutic day-care facility over several weeks, observation of a several hour multi-disciplinary staffing at a child advocacy center, observation at a chemical dependency program for adolescents, etc. Additionally, fellows and attendings will have the opportunity to provide volunteer time together in various community centers. This seminar is included to help fellows maintain and develop meaning in their work and to form deeper connections with the mental health community. |
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Case Conference Series | Fellows will present a case from their patient case-load and the case will be discussed. Each conference will be supervised by a selected attending and specific learning points will be identified for presentation and discussion. Additional faculty will be invited to enrich the academic discussion. |
Observed Case Formulation Series | Fellows will identify a difficult case from their clinical case-load and will invite the patient and their family to the conference. The fellow will select an attending who will interview the patient in an interview office. The fellows and other faculty will observe the attending interview and following the completion of the interview, the case will be discussed. This will allow fellows to have the opportunity to learn by observing diagnostic interviews that are completed by faculty. |
Journal Club Series | Residents discuss important past and relevant recent literature articles with a faculty moderator. Emphasis on critical thinking and research strength discussions |
Quality, Safety, and Ethics Series | Principles of quality, patient safety, and ethics in medicine and psychiatry are discussed using case-based issues presented by residents or other staff. Current and historic literature related to the case and the issues represented are discussed. The process encourages the regular and routine use of these principles in daily practice and life-long learning. |
Neuroscience and Neurobiology Series | Fellows will learn the basic neurobiology associated with psychiatric disorders and brain development. The neurobiological associations with mood, emotion and cognitive development will be explored. Neuropsychological and Psychoeducational testing will be reviewed and discussed. Neuroimaging techniques and their particular applications will be reviewed. |
Fellow Wellness Series | Fellows will have protected time to participate in an independent wellness initiative. This will allow fellows to have time to keep their own medical and dental appointments, attend exercise or other wellness activities, or any other activity that will contribute to their overall sense of wellness. |
Special Topics Series | This course will follow the Special Topics section in Dulcan’s Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Lecture topics will include items such as child abuse and neglect, cultural and religious issues, youth suicide, gender dysphoria and nonconformity, psychiatric emergencies, tele-mental health, family transitions, aggression and violence, etc. |
Research and Quality Improvement Series | This course will teach the fundamentals of designing a clinical research or quality improvement project. |
Integrated Neuroscience Series | This course will incorporate learning principles from the National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative (NNCI) to help fellows incorporate their growing knowledge from the neuroscience and neurobiology series into their clinical experiences. |
“Fifth Week Series” | Several times per year, there is a 5th week in a month. On the afternoon of this month, fellows will be provided with additional intensive training in a specific modality (ie. Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics, etc). Fellows will complete online training modules or attend live training courses during this series. |
Developmental Pediatrics Series | Fellows are invited to attend the didactics that are held for the developmental and behavioral pediatrics fellows. Lectures will include topics such as biofeedback, Down Syndrome and William’s Syndrome, gender and sexuality in adolescents, etc. |
Psychiatry Grand Rounds | Faculty, visiting lecturers, residents and fellows present on a variety of topics including topics of personal interest, research endeavors and various topics of interest. CME is provided and community members are encouraged to attend. |
