Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Greenville - About Us

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine offers a two-year, ACGME accredited Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program that is designed to train psychiatrists how to treat the unique needs of this specialized patient population.  Fellowship learning experiences include traditional inpatient, outpatient, and consult-liaison experiences in addition to residential treatment, community-based initiatives, school-based programming, and a focus on interdisciplinary and collaborative care.

As one of only three psychiatry training sites in South Carolina, and the only child and adolescent training program in the Upstate, the fellowship utilizes faculty and teaching opportunities throughout the region to better the care for all children.  Our first year will include rotations on an inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric unit as well as rotations in our children’s hospital to provide psychiatric consultation for pediatrics patients.  First and second year fellows will practice in a continuity outpatient clinic where they will have a two year longitudinal experience.  Fellows will start seeing patients for psychotherapy and medication management in their first year and will have the opportunity to follow patients for up to two full years.  Additionally, fellows will have a longitudinal pediatric neurology and developmental pediatrics experience during their first year in the outpatient pediatrics clinics.

During the second year, our fellows will rotate through a host of unique outpatient settings including elective rotations in many facets of child and adolescent psychiatry.  Examples of rotation experiences include school health, forensic psychiatry, eating disorders, residential treatment, trauma treatment, addiction psychiatry, pain-management, psychiatric research, and community-based psychiatry.  We expect that options for trainees will continue to expand in concert with the development of psychiatric services within our health system and the Greenville community.
