Endocrinology Fellowship Columbia - Curriculum
Endocrinology educational experiences
Clinical environments
Prisma Health Richland Hospital and the Dorn VA Hospital serve as the major sites of clinical instruction. Both medical centers provide state-of-the-art facilities serving diverse medical and surgical specialties. Fellows are instructed by six core faculty members who supervise a large referral practice.
Consultation services, which span eight months per year, will feature endocrine fellows learning outpatient and inpatient management of diabetes mellitus and a host of complex endocrinopathies. The other four months are spent on elective rotations and research, while continuing to attend continuity clinics and educational conference in the morning. Required elective rotations include pediatric endocrinology and reproductive endocrinology.
Fellows participate in weekly endocrine/diabetes outpatient clinics at the VA Hospital and a daily referral clinic at the department of medicine offices adjacent to Prisma Health Richland Hospital. Fellows are instructed in performing thyroid ultrasound, fine needle aspiration of the thyroid, insulin pump therapy, bone density measurement and continuous glucose monitoring interpretation.
Research environment
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism provide opportunities for basic and clinical research. Trainees are expected to identify areas of research interest by attending research seminars, journal clubs and meetings with potential mentors. Each fellow is expected to present research results at a national meeting and publish original investigations in a referred journal. Conferences include a weekly clinical endocrine and basic science conference, a monthly research conference, a weekly journal club and weekly core lectures. The journal club reviews current articles related to endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism. The fellow is responsible for literature reviews on assigned topics relating to current clinical problems for presentation at the weekly clinical conferences and for supervision of students and residents rotating in the endocrine service.
