Global health family medicine educational experiences
The Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Global Health Fellowship Program has four essential components to the program.
Clinical
- Clinical practice at rural hospitals: emergency medicine or hospitalist practice.
- 96 hours per month for 9 months per year.
Teaching
- Clinical instructor in the UofSC School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine.
- 1 half day per week of clinic attending at Prisma Health Family Medicine clinic.
- 3 weeks of attending on family medicine inpatient service.
- 16 half days of attending in the Family Medicine Travel Clinic.
Didactics
- Formal training in public health.
- Master's degree in public health (MPH) through the Arnold School of Public Health.
- Fellowship didactics at 7 a.m. on Tuesday mornings
- Journal club.
Core curriculum: International service/research project
The two-year program will be invested at a specific international partner site.
- PGY-4 year, August: 1–2 week initial visit to evaluate the partner site and collaboratively plan a feasible research and service program
- PGY-4 year, January–March: 3-month stay at international site for initial evaluation and detailed planning for implementation of research/service program
- PGY-5 year, August–October: 3-month stay at international site for implementation of research/service program.
- PGY-5 year, February: Evaluation of effects of intervention.
Elective opportunities
The fellow may pursue one or two as time permits:
- Longitudinal HIV clinic.
- Point of care ultrasound.
- Refugee clinic.
- Prenatal care among the Latina population.
Other potential options that could be explored: maternity care, medical student education, simulation, interprofessional education, dental, endoscopy, trauma.
