Family Medicine Global Health Fellowship Columbia - How to Apply

Application information

Our program does NOT participate in the ERAS electronic application service or National Residency Matching Program. The application process is according to UofSC School of Medicine faculty hiring guidelines.

We begin accepting applications starting in July and going through October. Interviews are scheduled on Fridays in October–December. We plan to fill the position by the first week in January.

The following materials are required for applications:
  • 3 letters of recommendation. One letter must be from the program director of the applicant's residency.
  • Curriculum vitae (resume).
  • A personal statement describing the applicant's interests and professional goals.
  • Transcripts of USMLE scores or COMLEX-USA.
  • Medical school transcript.
  • Photograph (optional but helpful).
  • ECFMG (international medical graduates only).

Interview and selection process

  • The application process will begin in July and will continue until early December.
  • Applications will be reviewed once all the requirements listed above have been received by the fellowship coordinator.
  • Interviews will begin in October and continue through early December.  They are usually held on Fridays. During the visit applicants will meet with members of the faculty and the current fellows.
  • We do understand that difficulties arise in scheduling multiple interviews, and we will try to accommodate individual requests for other dates wherever possible.
Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications to be eligible for fellowship training:
  • Be able to obtain a South Carolina Medical license by the anticipated start date of the fellowship.  
  • Graduate of U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Graduate of a foreign medical school with:
    1. A valid ECFMG certificate, or
    2.  Completion of Fifth Pathway Program provided by a medical school accredited by the LCM.

In addition to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, applicants with J-1 visas are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be board eligible or board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine by the anticipated start date of the fellowship program. Applicants who have completed residencies in specialties such as internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, or emergency medicine may also be considered.
