Research, Transplant Hepatology Rotation, Educational Series and Conferences

Research

Fellows will have mentorship and protected time to design and complete clinical research that is relevant to Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Fellows are encouraged to formulate a research proposal and will have a total of 24 weeks of clinical research time distributed throughout their 3 year fellowship period. The goal of the clinical research opportunity is to present at a research conference or publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Transplant Hepatology

The rotation in liver transplantation will provide fellows with a breadth of experience in caring for patients with liver failure requiring liver transplant. Since the transplant services are not available at the Prisma Health-Greenville Memorial Hospital, the fellows will obtain this clinical experience at the Atrium Health- Carolinas Medical Center’s liver transplantation program in Charlotte, North Carolina. The rotation will equip the fellows with the tools to evaluate a patient with hepatic dysfunction, understand the overall work-up including laboratory studies, review of pathology and various imaging modalities. Additionally they will be able to recognize when to refer a patient for transplant evaluation. These skills should be relevant and valuable to the fellows and are applicable to careers spanning from General Gastroenterology to Transplant Hepatology. Fellows will develop these skills through various clinical opportunities including hepatology clinic, liver transplant clinic, inpatient consults and rounds with the medical and/or surgical hepatology teams, hepatology specific didactic conferences and observing liver transplants in the OR. Prisma Health will cover housing in conjunction with participating site. The malpractice insurance for the rotating fellows is covered through Prisma Health.

Educational Series and Conferences

Conference participation spans the full 3 years of fellow’s training. These conferences will include journal club, fellows case conference, gastroenterology morbidity and mortality, divisional quality improvement conference, pathology conference, GI multidisciplinary conference including gastroenterology, medical oncology, surgical oncology, colorectal surgery and interventional radiology and research conferences. The fellows will also participate in conferences within the department of medicine such as internal medicine grand rounds. There will be a core curriculum series for the entire training period. All conferences will be scheduled such more than one faculty member is present to ensure peer-peer and peer-faculty interaction. The first year fellows will also have the opportunity to practice their endoscopic procedural skills in our simulation center.
