Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship Columbia - Director's Welcome
We are grateful for your interest in our program.
The Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship at Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina was established in 2018. Our ACGME-accredited program will prepare you to be a clinician, educator, mentor and guide on the journey of serious illness. You will learn how to take care of your patients, your colleagues, and yourself as you walk with patients under your care.
I believe in this fellowship. I completed my training in this program during the 2019–2020 year and would recommend training here. Our fellowship doesn’t train fellows to be great doctors; It trains them to be great humans who practice patient-centered, interdisciplinary care.
During interviews, applicants will meet our engaged, interdisciplinary faculty who work together to provide excellent patient care and an incomparable educational experience. Basing our fellowship training in the interdisciplinary team model supports the strengths of hospice and palliative care—the whole-person approach.
We leverage this approach with weekly interdisciplinary teaching rounds; examining a single case from the perspective of each discipline to learn from each other and to provide the best care possible to our patients. I believe that well-rounded physicians should learn from our social workers, nurses, chaplains, nurse practitioners, and all other team members.
At the end of this fellowship, you will have obtained the skills necessary to practice hospice and palliative care independently: the ability to navigate serious illness conversations, titrate complex opioid regimens, and support patients when no cure is possible. I understand the amount of trust that you are considering putting in me and in this fellowship. I take that responsibility seriously and will do my best to give you the best year of training possible. I look forward to reading your application. Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions.
Sincerely,
