00:15
so i'm sharon weissman i'm the
00:17
division chief for infectious disease as
00:19
well as the
00:20
program director for the infectious
00:22
disease fellowship program
00:24
one of our goals in this fellowship
00:27
program
00:27
in addition to making our turning our
00:30
fellows into
00:31
excellent infectious disease physicians
00:34
is to really
00:34
um teach them how to be clinical
00:37
scholars in the sense that they
00:39
take a more scholarly approach to their
00:40
patient care they review the literature
00:42
they're up on
00:43
on the latest information and they're
00:45
really educators not only
00:47
in their hospital and if they're at a
00:49
teaching program for their residents and
00:51
students but
00:52
for the whole community so our program
00:54
graduates have
00:55
gone into many different career paths
00:58
several of them have stayed within our
01:00
program and are now part of our faculty
01:02
they have more of an academic career
01:04
path although
01:05
even in that they've done different
01:06
things some have focused more on hiv
01:08
some have focused more on stewardship
01:10
some will focus more on bone and joint
01:12
infections
01:13
we've had a couple of fellows who've
01:15
gone into
01:16
private practice i think that's one of
01:18
the strengths
01:19
of our program is how collegial we are
01:23
and
01:23
the fellows that's one of the things
01:25
that attracts a lot of fellows to our
01:27
program
01:27
they feel a real sense of camaraderie we
01:29
have very
01:30
good faculty to fellow ratio and the
01:33
faculty are all very interested in the
01:35
fellows and teaching
01:36
and promoting their
01:40
their academic success as well as their
01:42
overall well-being
01:43
in the clinic we actually do it's called
01:46
ip for interprofessional education and
01:49
it's
01:49
we do four or five of these a year two
01:52
weeks programs where we have
01:53
trainees from many disciplines and they
01:56
get a two-week intensive
01:57
inter-professional training
02:00
where they spend time with all different
02:02
aspects of
02:04
the healthcare from pharmacy to case
02:07
management
02:08
to nursing to social work to
02:11
the physicians and really get to
02:13
understand how a healthcare system works
02:15
as a team
02:16
i'm edwin hayes i just finished my
02:18
infectious disease fellowship
02:21
last year with prisma health usc school
02:24
of medicine colombia
02:25
when i came here for my interview i was
02:28
just amazed
02:29
by the relationships that the people had
02:31
with each other
02:32
the attendings the pharmacy staff the
02:36
nurses
02:36
everyone is just very supportive and
02:39
cohesive they do a very good job of
02:41
working together
02:42
and i was very inspired by that when i
02:45
came here
02:46
though i was pretty impressed i didn't
02:48
expect to find a lot of the populations
02:50
that i enjoy working with
02:52
we have a robust refugee population that
02:54
our clinic works with especially as a
02:56
fellow
02:57
we also have a transgender clinic that
02:59
helps a lot of people in need in this
03:01
community
03:02
and that's really not something you
03:03
would think about when you think about
03:06
columbia south carolina but those
03:08
populations are here the need is here
03:11
and there's a lot of opportunity to do
03:14
good
03:15
and the more i learned about this this
03:17
area
03:18
the more interested i was in working
03:21
here
03:21
cost of living has greatly improved the
03:24
quality of life
03:25
it's very easy for me to have a smaller
03:28
amount of money put into
03:30
day-to-day things and still be able to
03:32
to spend more money doing the things i
03:34
love
03:34
like travel and eat out and that's
03:37
that's been a real boon for me
03:39
being here i absolutely wanted a program
03:41
that had the kind of intimate time
03:44
and and ability to be with me and kind
03:47
of mentor me directly as possible
03:49
but i also still wanted to have access
03:51
to things like research
03:53
and kind of that larger academic
03:55
institution and this program does a
03:57
really good job of balancing that
03:59
i feel like i get that personal
04:02
interaction that i'm looking for
04:04
but i still have access to these larger
04:06
academic discussions with a group full
04:08
of great minds
04:10
so it's been a really good balance of
04:12
the things that i look for
04:14
in practice and in learning to be a
04:26
doctor
04:29
you
