Infectious Diseases Fellowship Columbia - Conferences
Diverse lecture topics and case conferences
Our comprehensive didactic series consists of diverse lecture topics and case conferences presented by both the fellow and faculty (physician and PharmD). This complements the clinical experience and cultivates better understanding of ID topics. These topics include but are not limited to:
- Hospital epidemiology and infection prevention.
- Antimicrobial stewardship.
- Microbiology.
- Infections in patients with major impairments of host defense.
- Hardware infections.
- HIV resistance/new therapies.
- Tropical disease and research methodology.
This also serves to provide a forum to discuss up-to-date literature, controversies in infectious disease, medical errors and complications and management of complicated infectious disease patients.
The program uses a multidisciplinary approach with the help of public health and infectious diseases pharmacy faculty.
Conference series
(See sample schedules in tables below)
Didactic lectures
- Key topics are highlighted and reviewed by Infectious Diseases Physician and PharmD faculty. Based upon the Mandell, Douglas, and Bennett’s Principles and Practice of Infectious Disease, these topics are presented on a weekly basis longitudinally over the course of the fellowship. These sessions prepare the fellows for a variety of clinical challenges as well as their Infectious Disease boards.
Case conferences
- Weekly case-based conference in which fellows and faculty discuss thought-provoking/relevant cases and controversy in infectious disease practices.
Management/mortality/morbidity meeting (including genotypes)
- Monthly conference focused on complicated HIV and hepatitis management and drug resistance. Fellows present an assigned topic for a portion of the hour, followed by a faculty member discussing a difficult to manage HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C case, as well as near misses and poor outcomes with root cause analysis.
Journal club
- During these conferences, a fellow and a faculty member split the hour-long session and critique up-to-date infectious diseases-related journal articles, as well as discuss research methodology and statistics.
Research conferences
- Monthly conference in which research topics are reviewed. In addition, this conference is used as a forum for fellows to present their ongoing research activity for feedback from faculty and colleagues.
Other
- City wide: monthly case-based regional infectious diseases conference with the participation of pharmacy, public health and infectious diseases faculty. Recent data as well as outbreak literature and interesting cases are presented.
- Hepatitis C telehealth: These sessions are done times per month via the SCAETC. Hepatitis C cases are discussed along with a didactic portion of selected topics.
- PrEP telehealth: These sessions are done times per month via the SCAETC. PrEP cases are discussed along with a didactic portion of selected sexual health and LGBTQIA+ topics.
- Infectious Diseases Society of America: annual national meeting (ID Week): all fellows may attend each year of their fellowship training.
- South Carolina Infectious Disease Society (SCIDS) meeting: A bi-annual statewide infectious diseases meeting where invited keynote speakers and local infectious diseases physicians present current topics. Fellows are invited to attend and have the opportunity to present their research.
