Infectious Diseases Fellowship Columbia - How to Apply

Application information

Our program participates in the ERAS electronic application service and the National Residency Matching Program for Infectious Diseases fellowship match. The following materials are required for applications to the Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia:

  • Common application form submitted through ERAS.
  • 3 letters of recommendation. One letter must be from the program director of the applicant's residency.
  • Curriculum vitae (resume).
  • A personal statement describing your interests and professionals goals.
  • Transcripts of USMLE scores or COMLEX-USA.
  • Medical school transcript.
  • Photograph (optional but helpful).
  • ECFMG (International Medical Graduates only).
  • If interest in Infectious Disease/Critical Care track, please communicate with Sandra Molina and we will arrange interviews with the Critical Care Division.

Interview and selection process

  • The application process and interview process will begin in July and continues until November.
  • Applications will be reviewed once all the requirements listed above have been received by the program director through ERAS.
  • Interviews will be conducted virtually and will begin in August and continue until November and are held on Wednesday and Friday mornings. During the visit applicants will meet with members of the faculty and with the current fellows. In addition, they will have the opportunity to attend and participate in our conferences/didactics.
  • We do understand that difficulties arise in scheduling multiple interviews, and we will try to accommodate individual requests for other dates wherever possible.
  • Interviews are by e-mail invitation only. Applicants who have met our requirements will be notified through email to the applicant's email address provided on the ERAS application.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be eligible for fellowship training:

  • Applicants must have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency prior to the anticipated start date of the Infectious Disease Fellowship program.
  • Graduate of U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). OR
  • Graduate of a foreign medical school with: 
    1. A valid ECFMG certificate, or
    2. Completion of Fifth Pathway Program provided by a medical school accredited by the LCM.

Applicants with a J-1 visa, in addition to U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible to apply.

The Fellowship Selection Committee determines the rank list and order for NRMP. Candidates will be selected for the NRMP rank list and order based on their academic credentials, preparedness, ability, aptitude, communication skills and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity as demonstrated during the interview.
