00:16
my name is alfie carbonell
00:17
i'm the vice chair of academics for the
00:19
department of surgery here at prisma
00:21
health and also serve as the
00:22
fellowship program director for the
00:24
minimally invasive surgery fellowship
00:26
i think our program is uh is is special
00:29
and
00:29
compares well to others just because we
00:31
have a
00:33
high surgical volume one of the things
00:36
that's important when candidates are
00:37
looking at programs
00:38
is to you know clearly research the area
00:42
look at the surgical volumes and the
00:44
case mix that
00:46
fellowships offer because there are a
00:48
lot of fellowships
00:49
and many of them are different we have
00:52
two fellows a year that
00:53
spend time between bariatrics as well as
00:56
minimally invasive surgery and get a an
00:59
incredible exposure
01:00
to four gut surgery complex abdominal
01:03
wall reconstruction
01:05
and endocrine surgery as well and i
01:08
think they get an immense amount of
01:09
mentorship as well
01:10
from real leaders in the clinical field
01:14
in each of those disciplines we have
01:16
eight surgical faculty in our minimally
01:18
invasive
01:19
surgery division that help train the
01:22
residents and fellows
01:24
and all of us have our own uh
01:27
unique interests and and specialties
01:29
i've really enjoyed to see
01:31
the success that our fellows have had
01:34
professionally and clinically once they
01:36
leave our program some have gone into
01:38
private practice
01:40
and enjoyed a lot of success uh with
01:42
that
01:43
and many have gone on to academic
01:45
practices as well
01:47
it's been it's been immense to just
01:49
watch them flourish
01:50
after coming here with you know basic
01:52
set of general surgery skills
01:55
uh learning what we do we impart that
01:57
knowledge seeing them present on the
01:59
national stage
02:00
uh their academic work and then going
02:02
out into clinical practice and being
02:04
being incredibly successful
02:09
my name is wes love and i'm currently
02:10
one of the minimally invasive surgery
02:12
fellows here i had the unique
02:13
opportunity to also be a resident here
02:15
for the previous five years in general
02:17
surgery the the cohesive nature of
02:19
at least in department of surgery as a
02:21
whole is um
02:23
it's it's priceless this is the the best
02:25
training i've encountered and i want to
02:27
work with these guys these are the type
02:28
of people even if they weren't and they
02:30
are but even if they weren't
02:32
the best at what they do in the field
02:33
it's just nice to get up in the morning
02:35
and go i'm going to go work with you
02:36
know dr carbene or dr warren
02:37
it's going to be a great day quality
02:40
life in greenville and the city of
02:41
greenville itself
02:42
was very helpful in factoring into the
02:44
decision walking through downtown
02:45
walking through all the stuff the house
02:47
we ended up buying in a subdivision
02:48
right on the swamp rabbit trail i mean
02:50
it was
02:50
just so we couldn't wait to move up here
02:52
because it was such an exciting area
02:54
to live in and i can i mean you
02:56
certainly work a lot in residency and
02:58
fellowship but when you have free time
02:59
there's always something
03:01
interesting to do in fellowship there is
03:04
a tremendous amount of autonomy at the
03:06
beginning it's almost a scary amount of
03:07
autonomy i mean they're there they're
03:09
with you the whole case but it
03:10
you know they'll let you struggle a
03:12
little bit and it has made the
03:13
difference in me graduating feeling
03:15
totally comfortable to be on my own as
03:17
opposed to
03:18
you know the alternative being extremely
03:19
nervous it's difficult right then and
03:22
you're sweating it but when you look
03:23
back you're like yeah we did a good job
03:24
with it like that was a satisfying
03:26
outcome
03:26
the ability to see a problem and then in
03:28
less than a month not only is it better
03:30
but the patient's quality of life has
03:31
just
03:32
improved at a geometric rate i mean
03:34
there's no you can't put a number on on
03:36
how satisfying and fulfilling that is
03:38
these guys are at the cutting edge of
03:39
their field they're doing stuff that
03:41
nobody in this sector of the country is
03:42
doing and more importantly they are
03:45
incredible to work with
