Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Greenville - Program Details
The Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Fellowship is a one-year program that is meant to build robotic, laparoscopic and endoscopic skills on the basic skill set accumulated during general surgery training. The program is accredited by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Program Features
- Rotations on the Minimally Invasive Service with two fellowship-trained MIS attendings and a fellowship-trained endocrine surgeon
- The Bariatric Surgery Service with two full-time bariatric surgeons
- The Bariatric Service is located at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital and is recognized as a center of excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
- Operative experience is expected to range from 250-300 laparoscopic cases and 75-100 bariatric procedures
- Fellows will build on their knowledge of the pathophysiology of diseases amenable to minimally invasive surgical techniques.

- Repair of abdominal wall hernias
- Antireflux surgery
- Surgical therapy of esophageal motility disorders and esophageal cancer
- Biliary and pancreatic surgery
- Therapy of colonic neoplasia
- Bariatric surgery
- Adrenal
- Splenic
- Kidney disorders
Fellow Expectations
- Understand the operative indications and preoperative preparation of patients for surgery of the above conditions
- The choices of operation that are available and appropriate
- How to avoid intraoperative complications
- How to recognize and treat perioperative complications of the above diseases
MIS and Bariatrics Admissions
Positions are matched by the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS and Bariatrics) Fellowship Council and are available during the fourth year of general surgery residency. Applications will be accepted through the MIS and Bariatrics Fellowship Council website only.
