Pulmonary Disease & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Greenville - Resident Perspectives
The creation of internal medicine fellowships for Prisma Health in Greenville, SC represents the next big step for the Department of Medicine and for the Internal Medicine Residency program in particular. I am very excited to see how the addition of fellowships will further improve our already great education and increase academic opportunities for our resident physicians. Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, and Pulmonary/Critical Care expertise is always needed in our area, and the well-being of our patients will be better served by providing highly qualified trained physicians in these specialties. The residents of the internal medicine program are ecstatic about the opportunities this good news represents.

The news of adding fellowships in the Department of Medicine at Prisma Health in Greenville is exciting to say the least. As a recent graduate of the medicine program I can attest to the fantastic academic and clinical environment we have in place. Adding fellowships in Gastroenterology, Pulmonary Medicine/Critical Care, and Infectious Disease will certainly build on the existing foundation. Outside of training fantastic specialists, I am confident we will quickly see how much these programs influence and strengthen the education of residents, University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville medical students, and beyond. I suspect our fellowships will continue to attract more physicians who are enthusiastic about pursuing graduate medical education and practice in the city of Greenville. Perhaps most importantly, I am anxious to see how much our community will benefit from the changes in training, academia, and healthcare delivery.

I was extremely excited to hear that Prisma Health will be starting three new fellowship programs. The internal medicine residency program consistently produces fantastic physicians whether they continue their career in primary care or as subspecialists. With the addition of these fellowships, residents will now have the opportunity to continue their training in the beautiful Upstate while providing more qualified physicians for the community. Additionally, adding fellowships will provide even further academic structure, offer more research opportunities, and allow the entire health system to improve.

I’m quite pleased that we are getting fellowship programs here for a few major reasons. For one, it shows potential residents, fellows and attendings we have faculty that are invested in creating a learning environment for multiple levels of trainees. Another reason is the belief that fellowships will indeed attract skilled individuals who are interested in furthering their training and bring an influx of new ideas and experiences. Ultimately, my hope is that the addition of fellowships will eventually allow us to collectively take better care of our patients and address the ongoing healthcare shortages by adding more well-trained individuals.
