Sports Medicine Fellowship (Primary Care) Columbia - Fellows
Meet our current fellows
Joshua Maher, DO, was born and raised in Columbia Station, OH. After high school his family relocated to Daphne, AL. He attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL, where he majored in Biomedical Science. He then attended Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Auburn, AL followed by completing his family medicine residency at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN.
Dr. Maher chose Prisma Health/University of South Carolina for his sports medicine fellowship because of its well-rounded training opportunity. He is excited about the opportunity to cover athletics at many different levels of sport. He is also looking forward to the many ultrasound procedures and teaching opportunities available. During the interview process, he felt a connection to the faculty and learning environment created in Columbia which ultimately led to his decision to join the program.
Outside of work, Dr. Maher enjoys spending free time with his wife and 2-year-old son. He envisions himself an amateur grill-master, loves to spend time on the golf course and enjoys catching up on a good detective show or novel.
Benjamin Oliver, MD, was originally born in Columbia, South Carolina. He was raised in a military home and lived in many areas throughout his childhood including several countries in Latin America. He attended Belmont University where he majored in exercise science. He then completed medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. After which completed his family medicine residency (in the same hospital he was born at!) with Prisma Health/University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
As a resident at Prisma/USC, he was able to engage with the fellowship firsthand. He loved working with Dr. Foster, Dr. Wisinski and Dr. Keisler both in the clinic and on the sidelines. Ben was looking for a well-established program that would offer a comprehensive training with tons of Division 1 side-line coverage along with a robust curriculum in diagnostic ultrasound and procedures which this program provides! What ultimately tipped the scales were the relationships with the faculty members that he already trusted to guide him as he transitioned into his career in sports medicine. After finishing the interview season, it was an easy decision to choose the University of South Carolina for his fellowship training!
During his fellowship year, Ben looks forward to gaining the skills necessary to feel confident as a primary care sports physician especially in the team cover setting. He was fortunate to gain general point-of-care ultrasound experience during residency training and looks forward to adding the musculoskeletal skills in fellowship both diagnostic and procedurally. Ben aspires to try and complete the RMSK ultrasound certification during fellowship as well.
