Sports Medicine Fellowship (Primary Care) Columbia - Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy (OMT)

Expanding our sports medicine training

Beginning in 2023-2024, the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program is expanding the current fellowship curriculum to include training in osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT) for all sports medicine fellows.

OMT is an excellent tool for all practicing sports medicine physicians and can be utilized in the management and treatment of musculoskeletal and sports medicine conditions.

The OMT training is designed to help fellows to understand OMT and implement it as part of their musculoskeletal treatment plan, regardless of allopathic or osteopathic background. We meet each fellow at their respective level of previous OMT exposure and work with them to expand upon it.

Osteopathic manipulation therapy curriculum

Our monthly OMT sessions include lecture and workshop components taught by experienced fellowship faculty. Fellows are encouraged to use OMT as part of their patient care at the student health center and the family medicine outpatient clinic, where they will be directly supervised and supported by their fellowship faculty.

We expect our graduates to have the comfort level and confidence to perform an osteopathic assessment and use OMT when indicated while seeing active patients and student athletes in the clinic, on the sideline or in the athletic training room.

Our OMT curriculum covers the following:

  • Introduction to OMT and the quick osteopathic treatment.
  • Evaluation/treatment of cervical spine and head somatic dysfunction.
  • Evaluation/treatment of knee.
  • Evaluation/treatment of shoulder.
  • Evaluation/treatment of foot and ankle somatic dysfunction.
  • Evaluation/treatment of upper extremity.
  • Evaluation/treatment of innominate and sacral somatic dysfunction.
  • Evaluation/treatment of lumbar and lower rib somatic dysfunction.
  • Evaluation/treatment of thoracic and upper rib somatic dysfunction.
  • Evaluation/treatment of abdominal and pleural visceral somatic dysfunction.
  • Coding, billing and coverage of OMT.
