I am originally from the mountains of Western North Carolina. After attending Clemson University for undergrad, I worked as a chemical engineer here in Greenville, South Carolina. I attended medical school in Greenville at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Greenville and completed a residency in emergency medicine here with Prisma Health. I was thrilled for the opportunity to stay on and continue my training with a fellowship here with PCSM in Greenville. I was drawn by the breadth and depth of the clinical experience available here from a variety of phenomenal faculty members. My wife and I love living in Greenville and have difficulty imagining a better place to live and work. Greenville strikes a perfect balance as a wonderful medium sized city, and the secret is out. We can often be found enjoying the great outdoors in this lovely area: cycling on Paris Mountain, running on the swamp rabbit trail, hiking in the nearby mountains, or enjoying the seemingly endless dining options.
Brian Smerkers, MD

I grew up in Upstate New York, in a suburb of Albany called Clifton Park. After graduating high school, I moved to Worcester for my undergraduate degree at the College of the Holy Cross. After completing my degree, I had grand ambitions of making it big. How I was going to do this I had little idea so I moved to Boston and I figured I’d start at the bottom, by working in lab with mice, rats, and monkeys. I eventually chose to go to medical school at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, NY and later completed my residency in Internal Medicine at Boston University/Boston Medical Center. I worked as a Hospitalist at Boston Medical Center for four years before moving to Greenville for Sports Medicine fellowship. While I’m not sure I’ll ever get adjusted to the heat here, or apparently anywhere now (thanks climate change), my girlfriend and I have really been taking advantage of all the outdoor activities in and around Greenville. Whether that’s trips to the local mountains for runs and hikes, the new climbing gym and outdoor climbing spots in the area, or a bike down the Swamp Rabbit trail. When we’re ready to put away our climbing and hiking shoes, there’s plenty of breweries, restaurants, and cool venues to check out. We really have our work cut out for ourselves if we can even take advantage of half of the opportunities that Greenville has to offer!

I was born in College Station, Texas (home of the Texas A&M Aggies!) but I attended Rice University in Houston, Texas for undergrad. This worked out well because I loved my time in Houston so much that I stayed to attend Baylor College of Medicine. I couples matched with my wife in Nashville, Tennessee for my residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt where I learned a ton and fell in love with the Appalachia. This area’s southern charm mixed with rolling hills and greenery feels like a second home to me. I enjoy being outdoors, trying new twists on classic food and finding fun new ways to stay active. I’m looking forward to my time in Greenville while I learn as much as I can about treating musculoskeletal problems of all kinds. If the people, food and scenery are any indication of what is to come, I could not be more excited for my fellowship!

orn and raised in Tampa, Florida, I attended the University of Miami for undergrad and then moved to Boston for my master’s degree of Biomedical Sciences with a thesis in Malaria Vaccine Development. I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to return to the Tampa Bay Area for both medical school at the University of South Florida and residency at Bayfront Family Medicine Residency in St Petersburg. I chose this fellowship due to the wide diversity in the backgrounds of the faculty along with the vast array of sideline experiences available at the local, national, and international level. Outside of medicine, my fiancée and I love all outdoor activities, especially fishing and hiking, and we look forward to exploring more of Greenville and the surrounding area. Although we moved out of Florida for fellowship, we continue to support the teams of Champa Bay and are looking forward to more titles and Boat Parades in the near future.

Yathavan Rajakulasingam, MD
Current Job: Bowmanville Medical Associates (FM) and Atlete's Care (Sports), Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada
Dr Rajakulasingam, a native of the Great White North and land of maple syrup, received his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto and subsequently attended the University of Limerick in Ireland for medical school. He completed his family medicine residency at the Prisma Health – Greenville program, where he served as a chief resident. After completing his sports medicine fellowship, Dr Rajakulasingam joined a multidisciplinary clinic in Canada where he will be practicing both family and sports medicine, as well as being involved with the medical education of rotating medical students and residents.
Calan Sowa, MD

Dr. Sowa earned his undergraduate degree in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He then graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his internal medicine residency at Boston Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. After completing Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at Prisma Health, he joined the team at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. He serves as faculty for sports medicine as well as team physician for Laurens High School and the Greenville Drive. His hobbies include hiking, camping, skiing, cooking, home-brewing and rooting for all things New England sports.

Josh Pacious, MD
Current Job: Prisma Health, Greenville SC
Dr. Pacious is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. He completed his premedical undergraduate studies at Davidson College. Originally from Richmond, VA, he completed medical school there at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Following medical school, he finished Family Medicine Residency at Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) in Asheville, NC; during this time he was drawn to the musculoskeletal side of medicine and care of athletes, and subsequently transitioned to Greenville, SC where he completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas with Prisma Health. Following fellowship he joined the Prisma Health Department of Family Medicine and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine-Greenville as faculty with the Center for Family Medicine. His clinical interests include sports medicine and lifestyle medicine as well as diagnostic ultrasound. Dr. Pacious enjoys spending his leisure time backpacking and listening to podcasts, mountain biking in DuPont, running along the Swamp Rabbit and experimenting with new recipes.

Dr. Gutta earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Clemson University (Go Tigers!) in Clemson, South Carolina. She then graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville in Greenville, South Carolina. She completed her family medicine residency at Bayfront Health in sunny St. Petersburg, FL where she served as chief resident. After completing PCSM fellowship at Prisma Health she joined Prisma Health and splits her clinical time between the emergency medicine department, working in urgent care, and orthopedic department, working in primary care sports medicine. She serves as faculty for both sports medicine and emergency medicine and serves as the team physician for a local high school. Her hobbies include hiking, kayaking, playing sand volleyball, watching college football and hanging out with her husband and dog, Buddy.

I am originally from Virginia, completed my undergrad at the University of Virginia (Go Wahoos). I went to medical school in Tennessee at Lincoln Memorial University and I completed both my Pediatric residency and Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Greenville Health System. I really enjoyed my time in Greenville! The fellowship program is excellent and definitely made me feel well prepared for a career in Sports Medicine. I have now moved to Louisiana to start a Pediatric Sports Medicine department for the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. I will definitely miss the amazing faculty in Greenville but am very excited for this opportunity. “

Dr. McKnight earned his undergraduate degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from BGSU in Bowling Green, OH. He then graduated from The University of Toledo College of Medicine in Toledo, OH. He completed his family medicine residency at Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic where he served as Chief Resident. After completing PCSM fellowship at Prisma Health he joined the department of orthopedics at Tidelands Health in Myrtle Beach, SC. He plans to teach residents and medical students along with providing sports coverage to area high schools.

Dr. Barton earned her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine where she played lacrosse and golf, serving as captain in both sports in her senior year. She then graduated from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. She completed her residency in emergency medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and then joined the faculty at MUSC after completing fellowship at Prisma Health. Now at MUSC, she splits her clinical time between the emergency department and the orthopedic sports medicine clinic.
Jenna Crowder, MD

Dr. Crowder earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature from Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma. She then graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where she completed her residency in family medicine at St. Mark’s Hospital. Upon completion of residency, she moved to Greenville, South Carolina where she completed her primary care sports medicine fellowship at Greenville Health System/Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Following fellowship, she returned to Oklahoma City to work in a family medicine clinic where she will provide primary care and sports medicine care to the community.

Dr. Nelson attended Johns Hopkins University for her undergraduate education and then earned her PhD in genetics and medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. She completed her residency in family medicine at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals in Cleveland, OH prior to completing her primary care sports medicine fellowship at Greenville Health System/Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. She continues to work at Prisma Health/SHCC and is the Research Director for Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
Mallory Shasteen, MD

Dr. Shasteen completed her undergraduate degree at University of Notre Dame where she was part of the rowing team. She earned her medical degree from University of Florida College of Medicine. She went on to complete her residency training in emergency medicine at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC where she served as Chief Resident. She moved to Greenville for primary care sports medicine fellowship at Greenville Health System/Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas where she stayed on as faculty after completion. She recently moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she is working as an independent contractor for Emergency Resources Group.

Dr. Bailey attended Vanderbilt University for her undergraduate education and then earned her medical degree from the University of Toledo. She returned south to complete her residency in emergency medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and finally moved to Greenville to complete her primary care sports medicine fellowship at Greenville Health System/Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. She continues to work at Prisma Health and splits her clinical time between the emergency department and sports medicine clinic. She also serves as the team physician for USA Karate and Woodmont High School. Her clinical interests include event coverage, fracture care, and medical education.
Asad Siddiqi, DO

Dr. Siddiqi completed his medical education at A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona, and completed residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at New York University – Rusk Rehabilitation. During his Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship, he served as team physician for Mauldin High School, the Greenville Drive, North Greenville University, USA Karate, and multiple endurance events. After fellowship, he returned to New York to join the faculty at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons as an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine, instructing medical students, residents, and fellows in clinical sports medicine. He currently serves as team physician for the City College of New York, Hackley School, and the United Nations International School. His clinical interests within sports medicine include sustainable development of the youth athlete, medical education, injury prevention, lifestyle modification, concussion care, and musculoskeletal/sports ultrasound applications. In his free time, he enjoys basketball, live music, and spending time with his family.

Scott Annett, MD

Dr. Annett earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and then completed two residencies in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Greenville, SC. After several years in practice, he returned to Greenville to complete a sports medicine fellowship at Greenville Health System and the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas.
Dr. Annett is currently employed clinically with the Department of Orthopedics and the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas at their Hillcrest location. He is currently Team Physician for Hillcrest High School as well as the Greenville FC soccer team, who plays in the NPSL. His clinical interests include sports-related concussion, interventional Sports Ultrasound, exertional leg pain and compartment testing, soccer injuries, as well as orthobiologics.
Dr. Annett is in his second year as fellowship director for the Prisma Health / USC Greenville PCSM Fellowship in conjunction with the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. He is excited to continue to grow the sports program and collaborate with regional fellowships.
Bobby Masocol, MD

Dr. Masocol is from California. He completed medical school at Ross University and residency in family medicine at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va. He completed the primary care sports medicine fellowship at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas in 2015.
Dr. Masocol now practices sports medicine at Kaiser Permanente in the Sacramento area. Outside of medicine, he spends his time with family and enjoys being outdoors.

Jocelyn Szeto, MD

Dr. Szeto is originally from Houston, Texas, and she received her medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She went on to complete her residency training in Internal Medicine at Weill Cornell Methodist Hospital in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston and also served as Chief Resident. Dr. Szeto has practiced Internal Medicine and Occupational Medicine in the greater Houston area prior to fellowship training. Dr. Szeto has been an avid dancer since the age of two and is professionally trained in ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, aerial arts and competitive international ballroom. Her professional areas of interest include wellness and preventative medicine, women’s health, and performing arts medicine.

Brian Daniels, MD

Dr. Daniels is originally from Indiana and attended Indiana University School of Medicine. He then completed his Family Medicine Residency at Columbia St. Mary’s/Medical College of Wisconsin before training as a fellow at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. After completing fellowship, Dr. Daniels moved to Long Island, New York, where he became the team physician for the New York Islanders Hockey Club and subsequently became Medical Director for Hofstra University Athletics, team physician for the Long Island Nets (G-League team for the Brooklyn Nets), and Director of Player Medical Services for the US Open Tennis Championships. While he continues his role with the US Open, Dr. Daniels has moved to Orlando, Florida, and is now Medical Director of the United States Tennis Association National Campus and Player Development.

Chae Ko, MD
Dr. Ko completed his Family Medicine Residency at the University of South Carolina/Greenville Health System, where he served as a Chief Resident. While completing medical school at St. Matthews University, he obtained a concurrent Master’s degree in Health Administration from St. Joseph’s College of Maine. His professional interests include utilizing musculoskeletal ultrasound for diagnosis and therapy, general medical conditions in the athlete and prevention of sports-related injuries. Dr. Ko enjoys playing tennis and golf and is an avid sports fan of his undergraduate alma mater, The University of Tennessee.
Leslie Michaud, MD
Originally from the Chicagoland area, Dr. Michaud received her medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She completed a residency in Family Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and was the recipient of the International Health Program Scholarship. Dr. Michaud practiced both Family and Occupational Medicine in the suburbs of Chicago before returning for fellowship. Her areas of interest include nutrition, the obesity epidemic, and collision sports. She enjoys many activities including running, cooking and traveling.

Nicole Huntress is originally from Ohio. She did a pediatric residency in Greenville prior to primary care sports medicine fellowship at Steadman Hawkins. After taking some time off for travel and medical missions, Nicole landed in the foothills of Colorado where she enjoys skiing, running, hiking, and being a soccer mom. She practices primary care sports medicine with Centura and is the team physician for Golden High School.
Richard Morgan, MD
Associates in Family Medicine / Fort Collins, CO
Dr. Morgan received his medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA. He practiced Family Medicine in Seattle for eight years and then received advanced training as a fellow in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. Dr. Morgan had been practicing in the Greenville area at Greenville Health System’s MD360 since August 2012. He moved back to Colorado in 2015 where he practices Sports Medicine in a large independent group, Associates in Family Medicine. He also continues to practice some urgent care as well. In addition to the clinical work, he is a preceptor in Sports Medicine for a Family Medicine residency here in Fort Collins and also works as a team physician for a professional cycling team. In his free time, he enjoys adventures with his wife and two daughters and spending time on his bike.

Dr. Close is a graduate from the University of Northern Iowa, and went on to pursue a medical degree from Des Moines University. After earning his doctorate degree, he completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Subsequently, he came to the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas to complete a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine. He now lives in Denver and practices sports medicine with Centura Health. They will be starting a new sports medicine fellowship in 2019 and I look forward to helping to grow the program. Dr. Close specializes in the non-operative care of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions. In his spare time he enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, drawing, and camping with his wife and 2 boys.
Kevin Lawrence Sprouse, DO

Since completing his fellowship, Kevin has established Podium Sports Medicine in Knoxville, TN, and he also serves as the Head of Medicine for EF Pro Cycling. In these capacities, he works with elite and professional athletes from across the country and around the world. In addition to treating athletes, Kevin uses the tenets of Sports Medicine and Exercise Science to promote healthier lifestyles for all of his patients. The services at Podium include an exercise performance lab where biomechanic and physiologic data is gathered to help patients achieve their goals. Improving movement, nutrition, and fitness are key for both athletes and non-competitive individuals alike. Kevin enjoys practicing Sport and Exercise Medicine, whether diagnosing and treating injuries or helping people learn how to live healthier and perform better.

Dr. Blueitt is a Texas native. He received his undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in 2000. While at SMU, he enjoyed playing wide receiver for the Mustangs. Dr. Blueitt earned his medical degree at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. He went on to complete a Family Medicine residency at Southwest Georgia Family Medicine Program in Albany, GA.
Dr. Blueitt now practices primary care sports medicine and nonoperative orthopedics with Orthopedic Specialty Associates in Fort Worth, Texas. He enjoys golfing, fishing, spending time outdoors and being amongst family and friends.

Dr. Husen graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2004. She completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, SC in 2008. Prior to medical school, Dr. Husen graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Physical Therapy and spent 4 years working as a physical therapist. After fellowship, she returned to Oklahoma, where she practiced Primary Care in the Inpatient, Outpatient, and Rehab setting. She currently lives and practices Primary Care Sports Medicine in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has always enjoyed assisting and covering high school teams as well as providing coverage for the OKC Energy professional soccer team and the Tulsa Oilers professional hockey team. In her spare time, Dr. Husen enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, friends, and pups (Boomer & Sooner). You will often find her running, listening to live music, playing tennis, enjoying some patio time, and water skiing at the lake.

Dr. Tobola, originally from Dallas, Texas, graduated summa cum laude with a BS degree in biology from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma where she also played softball. She then went to the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. She is board certified in family medicine and received her residency training at the University of Texas-Tyler Family Medicine Residency Program. She is currently working at the Trinity Mother Frances Orthopedics and Sports Medicine clinic in Tyler, Tx. She is also the program director for the Trinity Mother Frances/UT Health Northeast Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program in Tyler.

Dr. So earned an undergraduate degree in biology at The Ohio State University, followed by a medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas medical school in the Philippines. Dr. So completed his residency in pediatrics at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. During his fellowship year he presented his research barriers to effective utilization of the AED in the high school setting. He also provided medical coverage for USA Cycling Championships in Greenville. Dr. So currently practices pediatric sports medicine for Cleveland Clinic Children’s. At the Clinic, he is on the Concussion Care Path Team, Pediatric Institute Research Council, and a leader for Media and Marketing at Children’s. In his spare time he enjoys golf, fishing, and skiing with his family. He is also an ice hockey coach.
