Sports Medicine (Primary Care) Greenville - Director's Message

Prisma Health and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine is a one-year ACGME accredited program with an optional second year sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine.

The fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive sports medicine training in musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal disease in athletes and active individuals. We provide coverage for professional, collegiate and high school athletes, as well as, the typical “weekend warrior.”

Our program is part of an academic health center and as such our physicians are held to a higher standard. They provide patient care and contribute to education, scholarly activity and service.

Our program has one of the largest core groups of primary care sports medicine faculty in the country including seven physicians trained in Family Medicine, two in Emergency Medicine, one in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and one in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This diverse group fosters an environment of critical thinking with an integrative relationship amongst orthopaedic surgery, physical therapy and sports performance.

Beyond our faculty, we bolster state-of-the-art facilities, one of the largest athletic training programs in the country, significant variety and volume of clinical patients and memorable experiences that will last a lifetime.

During these lab sessions, the fellows are able to practice and gain competence in ultrasound-guided injections of the shoulder, elbow, hand/wrist, hip and knee using cadaver specimens.

Our fellows are also able to learn about clinically-orientated Exercise Physiology and Human Performance with our faculty from both Furman University and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville.

Fellows gain significant hands-on training in the care of athletes of all skill levels including high school, collegiate and professional. Prisma Health and Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine also have one of the largest athletic training programs in the country.

Finally, through our collaboration with Clemson University, we are now offering a two-year option for fellowship training that focuses on mastering Sports Ultrasound, scholarly activity, faculty development and leadership.

Fellows who complete the two-year fellowship will receive a graduate certificate in Clinical and Translational Research from Clemson and be highly marketable for academic positions after completion of the program. We accept applicants who have completed accredited residency programs in:
