Sports Medicine (Primary Care) Greenville - Subspecialty Tracks

With such a large faculty from a variety of different specialties, we maintain close relationships with the Departments of Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and even Med/Peds. This allows us to be quite flexible in curriculum development, and be able to customize each fellow’s schedule to maximize their Sports Medicine experience while maintaining their skills in their primary specialty. To facilitate this process, we have established subspecialty tracks for each primary care specialty.

Emergency Medicine (EM)

Our program is an excellent option for the Emergency Physician (EP), with three board certified EPs as core faculty who continue to work regularly, if not predominantly, in the Prisma Health Emergency Departments. Five of our previous fellows have backgrounds in EM (see link), so we are very sensitive to the importance of maintaining one’s procedural and acute care skills during the fellowship year. As a fellow, EPs will work one 8-10 hour shift per week alongside one of the EM/SM faculty members. As “attendings”, we will make sure the fellow achieves the case and procedural load they are hoping for.

Greenville Memorial Hospital is a large, academic, level I trauma center seeing over 100,000 patient visits per year with 814 inpatient beds, and a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Center. Satellite hospitals within the Prisma Health system (Greer, Hillcrest, North Greenville, Baptist Easley, Laurens) provide a community ED experience for fellows.

The Department of Emergency Medicine also has a new residency program that began in July of 2017. EM fellows will have ample opportunity to lecture, attend joint conferences, provide bedside teaching, and work alongside EM residents on a regular basis.

The faculty mentor for EM fellows will be one of our core EM/SM faculty members. We can help guide you through the challenging board certification process and job search during your fellowship. As with each of our tracks, alterations can be made to accommodate any specific interests or goals the fellow may have.

Family Medicine (FM)

As a division of the Department of Family Medicine, our program is very well equipped to provide Family Physicians with the experience they are seeking. Eight of our 13 PCSM faculty members have a background in FM, with four practicing predominantly at the Center for Family Medicine. About half of our previous fellows were graduates of FM residency programs and have gone on to a variety of different careers discussed here.

As a fellow, FM physicians will work 1/2 day per week at the Center for Family Medicine, reporting to our FM/SM faculty. They work alongside the FM residents, with plenty of opportunities to teach and collaborate. They will also lecture to the residents twice a year, work together with them at events and physicals, and interact at various social events.

The faculty mentor for these fellows will be one of the core FM/SM faculty members. As with each of our tracks, alterations can be made to accommodate any specific interests or goals the fellow may have.

Internal Medicine (IM)

Our program is well equipped to meet the expectations of any Internist. We have trained both IM and Med/Peds physicians and welcome the opportunity to continue to do so. Dr. Scott Annett, our Program Director, completed his residency in Med/Peds at Prisma Health and maintains a close relationship with the Department of Internal Medicine. IM/SM fellows can expect to spend 1/2 day per week at the Internal Medicine Clinic seeing adult patients, or with a local Prisma Health Internal Medicine practice, depending on their preference.

Our fellows have the opportunity to see patients of all ages in their continuity clinic and PCSM clinics, while focusing on adolescents and college-aged patients in their high school and college team physician roles respectively. As with each of our tracks, alterations can be made to accommodate any specific interests or goals the fellow may have.

Med Peds (MP)

Our program is well equipped to meet the expectations of any Med Peds physician, and have trained several since 2006 including Scott Annett, our Program Director. He maintains a close relationship with our strong Department of Med Peds and collaborates on a sports medicine curriculum and lectures annually. SM fellows can spend their 1/2 day per week continuity clinic in a variety of settings, including one of several OP Prisma Health Med Peds Practices.

Pediatrics

Our program is well equipped to meet the expectations of any Pediatrician, and have trained several since 2006. Dr. Scott Annett, our Program Director, completed his residency in Med/Peds at Prisma Health and maintains a close relationship with the Department of Pediatrics. Peds/SM fellows can expect to spend 1/2 day per week at the Center for Family Medicine seeing pediatric patients, or with a local Prisma Health Pediatrics practice, depending on their preference. Our orthopedic department has a group of three exceptional pediatric orthopedists who are very supportive of our Peds/SM fellows.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)

Our program is well equipped to meet the expectations of any PM&R physician, and have trained several since 2006. Dr. Neha Chowdhary is our core faculty member with a PM&R background and will serve as faculty advisor for any matriculating PM&R/SM fellow. Dr. Sara Baird is an adjunct faculty member also trained in PM&R who works in our orthopedic clinics and can serve as a mentor and guide to maximize the fellowship experience. Both provide outpatient musculoskeletal care, do a high volume of electrodiagnostic studies, and a variety of different image-guided injections.

PM&R fellows will work with Dr. Chowdhary and/or Dr. Baird for at least 1/2 day per week. For those interested in interventional pain management, our PCSM department has an excellent relationship with the outpatient pain division of the Department of Anesthesiology and can integrate experiences with these providers into the curriculum appropriately. As with each of our tracks, alterations can be made to accommodate any specific interests or goals the fellow may have.
