my name is cami fennig and i am the
emergency medicine residency program
director here at prisma health
greenville
this program is a true hybrid between
academic and community emergency
medicine
so the residents practice primarily at
greenville memorial hospital which is a
level one
over a hundred thousand ed patients a
year stroke center
primary cardiac center and all the bells
and whistles that you need to function
in a very high level
there is a very very strong
focus and stress on their education to
make sure that they feel
very well trained to go out and practice
emergency medicine
anywhere at any time as well as do
extremely well on their board exams
the key experiences in this program
really depend on what the individual
resident is looking for
every single resident will get excellent
bedside training
they will leave here with procedure logs
that are fantastic they will have
experience
innovating hundreds of patients they
will put in plenty of lines
our most recent graduates have really
spanned the map we
have a recent graduate who is a critical
care fellow
out in oregon we have a recent graduate
who is a sports medicine fellow
down in alabama we have two recent
graduates who stayed on with us
to actually help matriculate as our
first fellows in our ultrasound
fellowship and in our medical education
and technology fellowship
so really a good balance of those that
pursue academic careers
those that pursue community careers and
then the kind of in between which would
be your hybrid practice
the resident will have a chance to train
with someone who's been in community
practice
single solo by themselves for 25 years
they'll have a chance to train with the
top-notch ultrasound fellowship-trained
academicians they'll have a chance to
work with md phds to complete their
scholarly work
so we really bring in a network of many
different types of emergency physicians
and support staff to make sure that
every resident's education is crafted
individually
so that when they go to look for a job
they feel like they have all the tools
to start and be effective on day one
my name is tj lynch currently at pgy3 i
actually had the opportunity to do an
acting
internship here and i really just i
loved the program as soon as i got here
the city is amazing
there's generally anything that you want
to do they have available here
and then when i had the opportunity to
work with the different attendings here
every single one of them were very
helpful
in terms of just wanting you to progress
to be a better resident as well as just
a better person in general
so what i also loved about kind of
starting off here was the fact that we
generally just got we got thrown in
there from the beginning
there was no real graded stepwise
progression thankfully
my second shift i was already intubating
a patient which i mean we see the very
sick patients early on and i think that
is great for training altogether
it allows us to really get thrown in
there and really get more comfortable
with dealing with these sicker patients
my name's sally peterson i'm a pgy2 in
the emergency medicine program
day one of intern year i was taking care
of
really really sick patients and i felt
very supported but they gave me a lot of
autonomy even as a first year which was
super important to me it's only a three
year program
i want to get as good as possible the
attendings are
truly my colleagues yes they they know
far more than i do and they've completed
their training and
but they they treat us almost as equals
which i felt was
a big plus for this program it feels
truly like a family
each of our residents again when we go
through these tough situations
the more tough situations we go to we
talk with each other about it and it
allows us to
build a bond that's pretty much
unbreakable you'll become part of this
special
team that treats all patients up here in
the upstate
they will be able to really form bonds
with their colleagues to make sure they
feel supported both in the residency
as well as beyond their residency in
most cases they'll make friends for life
