Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine
The division of pediatric emergency medicine is dedicated to improving the health of all children in the Upstate Region by providing care at Prisma Health Children's Hospital in the Upstate. The CEC opened in 1994 and is staffed by board-certified, fellowship trained pediatric emergency medicine physicians and dedicated pediatric nurses. We see children from birth to 17 years of age in a separate facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The CEC is a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center that serves nearly 30,000 children a year. There is also a dedicated child life program that eases the fears of children with “medical play.”
Prisma Health Children’s Hospital is the only comprehensive program dedicated exclusively to children’s health in the Upstate. More than 500,000 infants, children, and adolescents receive care yearly from over 35 pediatric specialties. There is a dedicated 12-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a level 3 NICU. Dedicated pediatric surgery and orthopedic groups provide care in the CEC as well.
Residents in the Prisma Health Emergency Medicine Residency have dedicated months in the CEC during their PGY-1 and PGY-2 years. Additionally, during the PGY-3 year, residents will receive additional shifts in the CEC. During general emergency medicine months, residents work scattered CEC shifts as well. Residents also rotate through the PICU during their PGY-2 year.
