Family Medicine Residency Columbia

About our program

Since 1977, the Family Medicine Residency Program based at Prisma Health Richland Hospital has taken pride in training more than 300 successful family physicians for South Carolina and the nation.

We partner closely with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine - Columbia to create an ideal "hybrid" training environment in a busy community hospital supported by academic resources.  This provides access to specialized care, fellowship training, research / grants, professional development and more, not to mention teaching and mentorship opportunities working directly with medical students and other health professional students in our clinics and hospital.  Learn more at: Family and Preventive Medicine - School of Medicine Columbia | University of South Carolina

Our graduates practice in all types of settings, including our outpatient family medicine clinic, the hospital, the home, the classroom, in long-term care facilities and on the athletic field. Our strong history provides an excellent foundation for preparing you for modern practice.

Full-breadth family medicine training

Residents in the Prisma Health Family Medicine Residency Program are trained by faculty who love their life's work, who believe that they were "called" to family medicine, and who care deeply for their patients and this residency.

Our faculty is large, diverse and committed to personalized education. They include:

  • 16+ full-time family physicians
  • Sports medicine, geriatric, global health and maternity care specialists
  • Preventive medicine faculty
  • A behavioral scientist
  • 2 clinical pharmacists

We emphasize full-breadth family medicine with a diverse patient population offers broad exposure to all age groups. Our strongest areas include adult medicine, child and adolescent health, musculoskeletal medicine, and office procedures including POCUS . We also maintain our own maternity care service and a busy inpatient service.

We are recognized as a Level III Patient-Centered Medical Home – the highest possible designation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). This recognition is for giving patients a quality medical home, a health care setting that emphasizes partnerships between individual patients and their personal physicians. We also offer a rural continuity clinic track in nearby town of Winnsboro in Fairfield County.
