Family Medicine Residency Greenville - Medical Student Education

The Prisma Health Family Medicine Residency Greenville prides itself on strong educational curricula. Residents and fellows play a leading role in this process for medical students and often find that their knowledge base becomes solidified during the process of teaching these learners.

Our family medicine department offers a variety of third- and fourth-year clerkships, including the following rotations:

Family Medicine Core Clerkship

This clinical experience exposes students to the core components of the broad field of family medicine. Students will learn in a variety of outpatient clinics, community and academic and spend one week on the inpatient family medicine teaching service. Students will be expected to expand their fund of medical knowledge in the areas of preventative and well person care, in addition to common acute and chronic disease management.

Throughout this clerkship, the student will broaden their understanding of the critical role that family medicine serves within the infrastructure of the United States healthcare system. Core family medicine themes will be emphasized throughout this rotation including the importance of continuity of care, lifestyle and preventative medicine, understanding how psychosocial factors affect care delivery, identifying and addressing healthcare disparities and care of patients within the greater context of their community and the population as a whole.

Sports Medicine

This elective is designed to give medical students exposure to the full complement of Primary Care Sports Medicine Care, including musculoskeletal injuries, as well as medical conditions such as concussion management and the prevention of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

Time will be spent with certified athletic trainers in/at their high school training room/events, with a physical therapist treating acute and overuse athletic injuries and with physicians and surgeons practicing sports medicine.

Lifestyle Medicine

This elective is designed to introduce medical students to lifestyle medicine, a hallmark of the USC School of Medicine Greenville. An emerging field, lifestyle medicine emphasizes lifestyle interventions in the prevention, treatment and management of the disease. The student will learn from different resources within the Greenville community and understand how an interdisciplinary team (e.g. family physician, primary care sports medicine physician, nutritionist, exercise physiologist, physical therapist, etc.) can yield healthy changes in patients through physical activity prescriptions, healthy eating, advanced motivational interviewing and stress reduction. The student will apply these principles to patient care at the Center for Family Medicine.

Rural Family Medicine

This elective is designed to offer the student an intensive rural family/suburban medicine experience. During this rotation, the student will learn first-hand the unique problems physicians face in the delivery of healthcare in a rural setting. The student will have the opportunity to learn the benefits of a team approach to healthcare through interaction with nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals. The student will also acquire first-hand information about the lifestyle of primary care physicians in the rural/suburban setting and the impact that they have on their patients and the surrounding community.

The student will also be introduced to practice management issues pertaining to a rural/suburban setting. This elective offers rotations in several small communities within a reasonable driving distance from Greenville. Other sites are available which will allow the student to stay in the community to better experience the lifestyle of a small-town physician.

Due to commitments with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, third-year clerkships are only offered internally. Sub-internships and electives are offered to internal students, as well as external students who are interested in our program. These spots are offered on a first come, first served basis.
