Family Medicine Residency Greenville - Resident Life

Opportunities to explore

The Prisma Health Family Medicine Residency Program in Greenville, South Carolina, offers many opportunities to explore the wonderful attractions the Upstate region has to offer.

During their spare time, our residents enjoy spending time with their families, friends, pets and each other. There are countless restaurants, bars, events and outdoor activities in our area, and residents enjoy free membership to our campus Life Center.

Our program makes a great effort to host several resident and faculty events each year including an intern welcome event, holiday party, graduation dinner, class retreats and wedding/baby showers. Wellness is an important aspect that our program values immensely. We have wellness days every fifth Wednesday during which we use our didactics time for a wellness event such as yoga, bowling, hiking or an escape room.

Resident perspectives

"I definitely love the food. There are many activities we can do such as Top Golf, hiking, water tubing, or just walk around downtown. I love eating out, bowling, and playing laser tag with the residency.”

–Kim Nguyen, PGY-3

“Greenville is one of the most fun cities I have ever lived in. For a relatively small city, it has so much to do and is absolutely beautiful. Obviously, the falls running through the middle of downtown is gorgeous, and I always bring friends to see that when people visit. Also, I am a huge foodie and the food here is AMAZING. You could live here all three years for residency and still not get to try all the awesome restaurants. If you are outdoorsy, there is so much hiking/walking like in Paris Mountain or Traveler's Rest, and then obviously on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. We have a dog, and we can take the dog almost everywhere, it is such a dog-friendly city and we love going to the dog parks and dog bars. If you want to travel, the Greenville Airport is so easy, but we are also only 1-2 hours from Atlanta and Charlotte for convenience. ”

–Dakota Boisseau, PGY-2

“I love the swamp rabbit trail! It's a beautiful (mostly rail to trail conversion) trail that runs for about 15 miles through downtown Greenville up to the town of Traveler's Rest. I love to run, bike, walk, and roller blade on it. I also love all the restaurants and breweries here, as well as our proximity to lakes and mountains. When I'm not working I enjoy being outside, being involved with my church, playing ultimate frisbee on Sunday afternoons, and eating Clare's ice cream (the best local ice cream spot.)”

–Emily Gibbs, PGY-2

“GVL FMR really priorities wellness and we always have fun when we get together as a residency program! So far, we've done high ropes courses, cooked plant-based meals, and we have more things scheduled. Honestly, we all get along so well that we've never needed a structured residency event to get together and hangout-- although the events are always fun!”

–Morgan Andrejchak, PGY-1

“I love all the opportunities Greenville has to offer. It is a small city with diverse people and food. There are outdoor opportunities nearby as well as a busy downtown. I feel like the community is active but also gives opportunity to serve an underserved population. I love to walk downtown, go on hikes with my dog, and check out local restaurants!

I really enjoyed the service activities we as a residency get to do together. All the interns cook for the Ronald McDonald House families, and the residency program works together to clean up part of the Reedy River near the clinic as well. I also like to participate in wellness activities! We have gone out to Spare Time, yoga, and axe throwing!”

– Kaitlyn Newman, PGY-3

"I love our weekly didactics, journal clubs, and recruitment social nights. Some might be "mandatory" but feels like a fun family gathering. Our attendings take turns hosting journal club at their houses so it amplifies that feeling. Any time we meet as a group for movies, baseball games, dinner, etc., it's a good time.”

–Tyler Bien, PGY-2

“I love Greenville! I've lived here for six years now, and I've loved the growth I've seen in that time. It has many of the conveniences you'd want in a larger city but has a smaller city feel and is easy to get around. The downtown area is gorgeous and is seemingly always adding new restaurants, coffee shops and breweries to try. There are so many beautiful parks to walk around within the city and Paris Mountain State Park is an awesome place to hike that's only 15 minutes away.

I love our didactics sessions on Wednesday afternoons. It's protected time for us to spend time together to do learning and is a great escape from the responsibilities of our clinical rotations.  My favorite activity we do together are our "Wellness Wednesdays." Those are every fifth Wednesday of the month and during those days, we'll do something fun together as a residency program. Things we've done in the past are axe throwing, yoga and laser tag.”

–Shiv Patel, PGY-3

"Greenville is such a bustling city with so many different activities. I love cycling or running on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. I enjoy the restaurant scene and all the versatility in foods to try. Downtown has live music, farmers markets, yoga, dancing, and so many other weekly activities. There are local lakes for boating or kayaking days and Paris Mountain State Park is close by for great hiking and camping opportunities. It is truly a town for all different hobbies and preferences. I love it here!”

–Ellen Combs, PGY-1
