my name is dylan barnes and i am a first
year general surgery resident here at
prisma health
my name is ahu i'm also one of the first
year residents here at prisma health in
general surgery looking for programs i
was looking for a place that would get
me into the operating room early so
would have early operative experience i
could tell based on my visitation here
and where the residents had gone
previously that they
felt comfortable and prepared to go out
of residency as a trained general
surgeon whenever i was looking for
programs i was looking for a level one
trauma center i was looking for the
early operative experience as well what
really drew me was just how confident
the residents were in their leadership
and it seemed like the program here was
very well run i chose surgery
as a young child i knew i wanted to be a
doctor and i had a mentor who was an
orthopedic surgeon and she led me in the
direction of surgery what really drew me
to surgery in general i like the fast
pace i like being able to touch a
patient feel their pathology and being
able to actually do something
with it directly myself i think i was
also surprised too by the range of
pathology that we see here being in the
middle of the state we get patients from
all over not only as a level one trauma
center and seeing the variety of traumas
but also seeing the different amounts of
general surgery cases and learning what
to do when these challenging patients
arrive all the attendants here are very
approachable they love to teach they're
really invested in our education we have
early autonomy here and i can tell that
they trust us but that's because they've
changed as well
my name is andrew van sickler i'm the
fifth year resident this year in the
general surgery department and the
acting chief resident as general surgic
residents you'll rotate at some of the
other local hospitals who rotate at
baptist we do some of the minimally
invasive surgery there the bariatric
surgery there there's great faculty and
mentorship out there as well and then we
also do rotations at the va where we go
through gi we do endoscopy rotations
there so we meet our endoscopy numbers
and then we also do general surgery out
there as well as critical care the
mentorship and the leadership that we
have um i think is you know the best in
the country colombia is a great city to
live in it's got good places to eat and
it's got a centralized location it's two
hours from a beach it's two hours from
the mountains it's two hours from
atlanta my advice to a resident is to
work hard never lose sight of what's
really important which is taking really
good care of patients and making sure
that they have good outcomes my name is
jesse clanton i'm an associate professor
of surgery and the program director of
the general surgery residency program
here at prisma health university of
south carolina in columbia there's a
focus on progressive autonomy in this
program and incredibly important for the
development of any surgery resident is
you have to get repetitions you have to
get that experience we're always doing
that in
a safe environment and in a supervised
way making decisions on patients in the
clinic knowing not just how to operate
and learning that but also learning when
and when not to operate our goal here is
to train residents that can succeed in
any environment and i'm proud that we've
had an excellent track record where our
residents here have been successful in
matching and getting jobs in the career
that they desire
my philosophy is i want to train a
resident that after they graduate this
program i would feel comfortable if that
resident was operating on a family
member of my own you learn something
about yourself in residency and not only
in icu nights but just on any trauma
call nights where you're taking care of
upwards of 50 plus patients what to do
and when to call for help and this
program teaches us adequately
