General Surgery Residency Columbia - Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Surgery at Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina.  Faculty in our department have a deep commitment to the highest quality clinical care and to educating the next generation of general surgeons to serve South Carolina and beyond.  Our department serves four distinct but geographically close hospitals in the Midlands region of South Carolina, and residents rotate at each of these hospitals, including Prisma Health Richland, a Level 1 Trauma Center, and our primary training site.  Prisma Health- Midlands serves a diverse population of nearly one million residents in the greater metropolitan area, providing ample exposure to a broad range of surgical pathology.  We train general surgery residents in a manner that prepares them well to enter immediately into general surgery practice or to pursue advanced fellowship opportunities after residency.  

The Department of Surgery provides a welcoming and collegial environment, while maintaining high standards for clinical and academic performance.  A structured program of didactic and simulation training supplements the outstanding clinical experience.  The program strongly supports progressive autonomy with appropriate supervision as residents progress toward graduation requirements, with an emphasis on competency-based assessment.
