Internal Medicine Residency Columbia - Didactics
Case and lecture-based opportunities
The didactic curriculum at the Prisma Health Internal Medicine Residency Program includes a wide variety of both case-based and lecture-based opportunities in inpatient and outpatient internal medicine and IM subspecialties. It also includes general education on social determinants of health, business of medicine and quality improvement.
Several dedicated peer-to-peer board review sessions are provided each block, in accordance with a block academic theme, and are mentored by our general medicine faculty. Our noon conference series is otherwise mapped to the ABIM curriculum and repeats twice over 36 months.
Highlights of our curriculum
Morning report
Our program directors, lead an interactive discussion and challenge residents to develop a differential diagnosis-based problem representation. Discussions are focused on developing critical skills in clinical decision making. Morning report is attended by faculty, residents, and medical students.
Departmental grand rounds
Grand rounds are held every Thursday at 8 a.m. in the hospital auditorium. Our general medicine faculty and specialists from around the country speak about their area of expertise and educate the audience on the latest developments in internal medicine. Additionally, each PGY3 resident presents a case during their last year of residency.
Journal watch noon conference
Journal Watch is a publication that summarizes and provides clinical commentary on the latest and most relevant research in general internal medicine. In these conferences, a group discussion is held reviewing highlighted articles from the most recently published editions of Journal Watch.
Medical ethics noon conference
The GME department of Prisma Health has developed a resident medical ethics and professionalism series. Several times throughout the year residents from various programs will lead a group discussion on an ethics topic of interest. Over the last five years, residents from our program have been a driving factor and leader of this series.
Ultrasound curriculum
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Prisma Health place great emphasis on ultrasound and its importance in medical education. You will find that the bedside utilization of ultrasound is ubiquitous in the Prisma Health/UofSC environment. Ultrasound training is provided through multiple didactic experiences: noon conference lectures, hands-on simulation and standardized patient encounters at the Ultrasound Institute of the University of South Carolina, bedside teaching during general medical wards, and during subspecialty rotations. In addition to the standard didactics, there is the opportunity to immerse yourself in ultrasound during a 4-week elective. At Prisma Health and the Dorn VA, there is 24-hour access to state of the art ultrasound technology to employ for diagnostic or procedural purposes.
Prisma Health Simulation Center
The Simulation Center provides residents with experiential learning opportunities through patient simulation encounters. Using high-fidelity patient simulators and advanced technology, the simulation specialist, facilitator and evaluator can recreate low-risk or high-risk patient care scenarios. Through direct observation, they can guide the learner through the skill and the decision-making process in real time. This type of encounter allows the learner to be immersed into a realistic situation, which allows for a strong cognitive, visual and kinesthetic learning environment. Throughout training, residents will participate in many Simulation Center courses. These include orientation sessions, procedure workshops, ACLS certification and renewal courses, and Fundamentals of Critical Care Support. The Simulation Center also holds our ambulatory workshops where residents train in office-based procedures such as injections.
