Internal Medicine Residency Greenville - Director's Welcome

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Prisma Health!

I am delighted to share more about our program and how we are intentionally driven by our mission statement. I joined Prisma Health in 2015 as a teaching hospitalist, and it has been an honor to work closely with our residents, faculty, and medical students. During my time at Prisma Health, I have witnessed our culture of medical education flourish.

Mission statement

Through purposeful curiosity, progressive autonomy, and individualized mentorship, our mission is to train exceptional internists who will emerge as future leaders and advocates in medical education, primary care, and subspecialty medicine.

Here’s how we bring our mission to life:

Purposeful curiosity

Our chief residents, faculty and leadership team continuously improve our curriculum to ensure residents develop medical knowledge in a systematic and meaningful way. Our various learning didactics, including morning reports, noon conferences and Friday academic half-days, foster clinical reasoning in safe learning environments. We encourage vulnerability and the understanding that it is okay to be wrong, cultivating a growth mindset among learners at all levels.

In our state-of-the-art simulation center, we practice procedures, various clinical scenarios and develop point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills to ensure our graduates are proficient in POCUS. Additionally, we participate in cooking classes with our patients to promote plant-based nutrition for managing chronic illnesses.

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, established in 2012, provides opportunities for residents to hone their teaching and mentorship skills alongside medical students. Our fellowships in Infectious Diseases, Pulmonary/Critical Care and Gastroenterology offer further mentorship and scholarship opportunities.

Progressive autonomy

As a resident and chief resident-led program, we pride ourselves on promoting early and appropriate autonomy. Through meaningful formative feedback, competency-based evaluations and individualized coaching, our residents evolve from patient care reporters and clinical data interpreters to team managers, educators and advocates.

Our residents also receive ample training and opportunities in various procedures, including central and arterial line placement, intubation, paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, joint injection/aspiration, women’s health procedures and other specialty-specific techniques.

Individualized mentorship

From day one, residents are connected with faculty mentors who guide their career paths and scholarship opportunities. Our leadership team includes regional and national advocates in medical education, primary care, subspecialty medicine, addiction, health policy and patient safety/quality. As a result, our residents successfully craft individualized and well-rounded career paths utilizing our extensive resources.

Overall experience

Our residency training in purposeful curiosity, progressive autonomy and individualized mentorship takes place in the beautiful city of Greenville. My family and I chose Greenville for its numerous outdoor recreational activities near the Appalachian Mountains, including hiking and cycling, its fantastic local food and brewery scene, vibrant performances and artists and family-friendly downtown.

Thank you for exploring our residency program. We encourage you to reach out if you would like to learn more. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you to our community.
