Internal Medicine Residency Greenville - Diversity and Inclusion

Our Commitment to Health Equity

At Prisma Health Internal Medicine Residency Greenville, we believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are foundational to the future of medicine. We are deeply committed to creating an environment that supports underrepresented in medicine (URiM) individuals, actively recruits diverse candidates, and continuously advances our curriculum to be anti-racist and inclusive. Our leadership proudly reflects these values, ensuring that every aspect of our program is shaped by a commitment to equity.

URiM Recruitment

We recognize the importance of early and meaningful connections in fostering a diverse and inclusive medical community. To support this goal:

  • We collaborate with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, including clerkship leadership and the Admissions Committee to connect early with URiM medical students.
  • We have established strong ties with our medical school’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter, currently mentoring several URiM students as they begin their medical journeys.
  • Our program actively participates in the GMEC DEI Subcommittee Virtual Open House, welcoming potential residents and sharing our commitment to diversity.
  • Starting in 2025, we will offer URiM Visiting Acting Internship scholarships to further support and attract talented individuals to our program.

Anti-Racist and Inclusive Curriculum

We are dedicated to cultivating a curriculum that not only acknowledges but actively combats health inequities. We believe this is critical to our mission of providing all patients with the best possible care. Our initiatives include:

  • Health Equity Morning Reports: These sessions, beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year, provide a space to discuss cases that involve inequities and microaggressions, helping our residents and faculty recognize and address these issues in clinical practice.
  • Didactic Sessions: We integrate health inequity data into our educational materials, ensuring that our residents are aware of the disparities affecting patient care.
  • Faculty Development: Our faculty is educated on anti-racism in evaluations and on teaching about health inequities. This commitment to ongoing learning helps us create a more informed and inclusive educational environment.
  • Gender Affirming Care OSCE: This Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is available to practice training and providing inclusive care for all patients.
  • Implicit Bias Training: Our residents complete implicit bias training through a required Implicit Bias Module, reinforcing the importance of self-awareness and equity in patient care. In addition, we have an interactive resident workshop on implicit bias recognition.
  • Health Equity Journal Club: This forum, beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year, allows residents and faculty to engage with the latest research on health disparities, fostering critical discussions and learning.

Leadership

Our commitment to DEI is reflected in our leadership structure:

  • DEI Committee: Resident-led and faculty-guided, this committee ensures that our program’s initiatives are informed by those who are most impacted.
  • DEI Leadership: We have several core faculty and residency leadership guide our DEI efforts. We are conscious of avoiding the minority tax on our URiM residents and faculty, ensuring that DEI work is supported and valued.
  • Conference Representation: Our program and residents proudly participate in the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and SNMA conferences, further demonstrating our commitment to supporting URiM individuals in medicine.

At Prisma Health Internal Medicine Residency Greenville, we are not just talking about diversity, equity, and inclusion; we are actively living these values every day. We invite you to join us on this journey, where your voice, your perspective, and your future in medicine are valued and supported.
