Greenville is a vibrant, diverse city. As a residency program, we are dedicated to serving our community and providing the highest possible level of medical care. Essential components of this mission are ensuring that our physician workforce is representative of the patients we care for and striving to create an environment that is inclusive of individuals from all backgrounds without exception. We recognize that there are groups who have been historically underrepresented in medicine, and we are committed to actively working toward reversing that, for the betterment of our team, patient care, and equity. We are consistently reflecting and challenging ourselves and our program to set the standard for creating an inclusive environment that values each individual and their unique background.
Clinically, residents are trained to provide holistic, patient centered care regardless of an individual’s race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, physical ability, medical conditions, or socioeconomic background. It is also essential for residents to understand the broader societal and healthcare system patterns that differentially impact people’s health. We have dedicated didactics addressing health inequities, implicit bias, and discrimination. Interested residents with Spanish proficiency can be certified to provide language concordant care in English and Spanish. There are also opportunities to pursue QI and research endeavors, as well as electives in Community and Population Health and/or Global Health. Mentorship opportunities are available through our faculty, the Levi S. Kirkland Sr., MD Society and MedEx academy.
