Sarah Hinton, MD

Sarah Hinton, MD

Program Director

Dr. Hinton received her undergraduate degree from Wofford College and her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She completed her Med-Peds residency at Prisma Health Upstate and served as chief resident in her 4th year.

Following residency, she worked at a federally qualified health center in the Upstate. She returned to Prisma Health in 2016.

During her time at Prisma Health, Dr. Hinton has served in leadership roles in clinical operations and graduate medical education (GME), such as the adolescent medicine rotation director and medical director of Student Health Services at Furman University. She is currently the chairperson of the Prisma Health Pediatric to Adult Care Transition committee. She was previously an Associate Program Director for the Med-Peds residency program before accepting her role as Program Director.

Her special interests include caring for under-resourced communities, adolescent and young adult medicine, LGBTQ+ care, pediatric to adult care transition and advocacy.

As a clinical educator, she is passionate about creating a psychologically safe clinical learning environment, resident wellness and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, enjoying the outdoors (trail running, flat water kayaking, hiking), and traveling.

Senthuran Ravindran, MD

Associate Program Director

Dr. Senthuran Ravindran received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and completed his medical degree at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine. He completed his Med-Peds residency training locally at this program, served as Med-Peds Chief Resident 2014-2015 and became Associate Program Director after graduation.

 

Since graduation, he has served as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital, received point-of-care ultrasound training and directs the Greer Hospitalist Medicine resident rotation.  He became Pediatric Hospital Medicine board-certified in the Fall 2022 and attends on the Pediatric Wards at the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital. In the last three years, he has received the 2021 Dr. Lloyd Hayes Hospitalist Service Award, the 2022 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, and the 2022 South Carolina American College of Physicians Early Career Physician Award.

His professional interests include hospital medicine, diversity/inclusion/equity promotion, resident mentorship and medical education especially individualized board preparation. 

Susan Li, MD

Associate Program Director

Dr. Li received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Davidson College and her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her Med-Peds residency training at The Ohio State University and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Following completion of residency, she remained on faculty at Ohio State practicing med/peds primary care and served as an adult cystic fibrosis (CF) provider at Nationwide Children’s Hospital for several years. During that time, she also developed a collaborative primary care and transition model for patients with CF and conducted research related to extrapulmonary disease management in adults with CF. In 2023, she joined the Prisma Health family, working in med/peds primary care and serving as the associate program director for the Med-Peds residency.

Her academic interests include cystic fibrosis, adolescent and young adult transition for special populations, breastfeeding medicine and resident mentorship.

Megan Houston has been with Prisma Health since 2010.

After almost 10 years with the Bradshaw Institute for Community Child Health & Advocacy, she shifted her focus to Graduate Medical Education with the Med Peds Residency and Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Fellowship and hasn’t looked back. 

Megan has a Masters of Education in Math & Science and began her career as a middle school math teacher.  Working in the world of GME, she is able to draw from her experiences as both a teacher and a child health advocate.

Megan graduated from Auburn University and cheers for the “other Tigers” any chance she gets! Megan and her husband, Howie enjoy spending time outside with their dogs, traveling to new places, hiking and grilling any piece of meat Howie can find on their Big Green Egg.

Meredith Eicken, MD, MPH is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and did her medical training at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Harvard Mass General Hospital and served as Med-Peds Chief resident her final year.  She earned her MPH at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and completed the Kraft Fellowship in Community Health Leadership at Massachusetts General Hospital at Revere HealthCare Center.  When she moved to Greenville, SC, she served as Associate Program Director for the Prisma Health Med-Peds residency program from 2018-2020 until transitioning to the Prisma Health Internal Medicine Residency Program Director in 2020.  Her professional interests include community health, particularly screening and addressing the social determinants of health and resident mentorship.

Jeff Gerac, MD

Jeff Gerac, MD

Dr. Gerac graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 2004. He then completed his Med-Peds residency here in Greenville in 2008. Dr. Gerac served as Med-Peds chief resident here during his 4th year. Currently Dr. Gerac attends on the pediatric wards at Children’s Hospital and has worked at Greer Memorial as a Med-Peds Hospitalist as well. In 2009 and 2010, Dr. Gerac was awarded the John P. Matthews Jr. Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award as the pediatric attending who best demonstrated outstanding clinical care and dedication to resident education.  Currently Dr. Gerac is also the lead physician for implementation of the EPIC Electronic Health Record at GHS.  He has worked closely with our faculty to develop templates to assist with the transition of adolescents and young adults from pediatric to adult care settings throughout the Greenville Health System.

Mike Guyton-Nunley, MD

Michael Guyton-Nunley, MD, was born and raised in Myrtle Beach, SC, and completed his medical training at the University of South Carolina: School of Medicine in 2010.  From there he completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics with Greenville Health System (now known as Prisma Health) and upon graduation, practiced general pediatrics and adolescent medicine from 2014-2016.  Knowing that he always wanted to pursue a specialty degree in adolescent medicine, he then completed his fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center.  This training affords him expertise in all things teenager and young adult, including reproductive health, sexual health, management of eating disorders, and care for the LGBT population.   He continues to work closely with Girlology/Guyology, teaching healthy growth and sexual behaviors to young men of the community, as well as pursing his interest in teaching and medical education whenever he can. Mike currently lives in Greenville, SC with his husband and their dog, and joins Prisma Health as a specialist in Adolescent Medicine, also serving as an attending physician with the Eating Recovery Center of the Carolinas.

Dr. Kolarik was raised in Canton, Ohio and attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate studies.  He received his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine where he graduated AOA. He then completed his Med-Peds residency at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center/University of Cincinnati Med-Peds Program. After residency, Dr. Kolarik completed a General Internal Medicine Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He then served as Associate Program Director for Med-Peds at UPMC until he took over as their Med-Peds Program Director in 2004.  While in Pittsburgh, he also co-created and led one of the only general academic Med-Peds fellowship programs in the nation. In July of 2008, Dr. Kolarik joined the faculty of the Greenville Health System (GHS), now Prisma Health – Upstate as Med-Peds Program Director. Dr. Kolarik was elected to the Med-Peds Program Director’s Association Executive Committee in 2012 and served as President of this national organization for 2013-14.  During his time on the MPPDA Executive Committee, Dr. Kolarik worked to develop internet resources for the MPPDA as well as helping to author the Textbook for Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Program Directors.  Dr. Kolarik has also been appointed to the ACGME Review Committee for Internal Medicine for a six-year term starting in 2017.  After thirteen years as Program director of the Prisma Health Med-Ped was promoted the position of the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education (GME) and the Prisma Health-Update DIO (Designated Institutional Official). He will continue to serve as key Clinical Med-Peds faculty, mentor Med-Peds residents and work closely with Med-Peds leadership at the GMH level to make system-wide improvements. Dr. Kolarik’s academic interests include resident wellness, transitional care, medical care for young adults with special health care needs, and doctor-patient communication.

Dr. Huber received her undergraduate degree from Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio where received a bachelor of science in biology. She then attended the Joan C. Edwards Marshall University School of Medicine. She was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society during her time there. She completed a Med-Peds residency in 2011 and a Med-Peds Rheumatology fellowship in 2015 at the Medical University of South Carolina. She served as the Med-Peds Chief Resident for 2010-11 and the Rheumatology Chief Fellow for 2013-14 and 2014-15. She currently works as a Med-Peds Rheumatologist at GHS. She has both a pediatric and adult rheumatology clinic at the Patewood Medical Campus where she cares for patients and teaches residents. She also sees pediatric rheumatology hospital consults at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Katherine Lewis, MD attended medical school at the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed her four year residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Ohio States University Hospital. She completed her combined adult and pediatric endocrinology fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. She is new to our Prisma Health system! She delivered an incredible Internal Medicine Grand Rounds: “Diabetes Across the Lifespan – Care Consideration for Different Ages & Stages” February 2020. Interests include transitional care and resident education.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Dr. Shanbhag is a graduate of Duke University School of Medicine and she completed her Med-Peds residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia/University of Pennsylvania. She then completed her pediatric cardiology fellowship at Emory University. Dr. Shanbhag is the leader of the Children’s Hospital Adult Congenital Heart Disease clinical program at GHS. Dr. Shanbhag grew up in Spartanburg, SC and has been excited to come back to the area to work. One of her passions is global outreach, and is she is fluent in Spanish. Most recently, she coordinated a medical mission in September 2010 to Jamaica where she screened 500 children for rheumatic heart disease. She has previously worked in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Botswana, and Bolivia. In her spare time, Dr. Shanbhag also loves exercising and enjoying the many outdoor activities of Greenville with her husband, two young sons and her dogs.

Dr. Burgess received his undergraduate degree in Engineering from the University of Alabama, Huntsville and his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.  Andy was well known in our program as a cheerful, hard-working resident who is tirelessly devoted to his fellow residents and to patients here in Greenville and across the globe.  Andy participated in a medical mission trip to Brazil during the third year of his residency.  After graduation, Dr. Burgess joined GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and also serves as teaching faculty for the Clinical Decision Making course for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville.

Dr. Burgess is a graduate of the University of Alabama, Huntsville where received her degree in Mechanical Engineering.  She then attended the University Of South Alabama College Of Medicine where she was the recipient of the Les Stockwell Med-Peds and the Medical Alumni Scholarships and was also president of the Student Assembly.  During her time at GHS, she served as the Vice President of the GHS House Staff Senate in 2014 and also as President in 2015 and 16.  After graduation, Shannon has joined GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine and serves as director of the 4th year Internal Medicine Clerkships for the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Greenville.

Dr. Coady is a native of South Carolina and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in biology. She was able to study abroad in Ireland during her four years there. She went on to the USC School of Medicine where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and graduated Magna Cum Laude.  She then completed her Med-Peds training at the University of Rochester and then was in private practice in North Carolina for several years before joining GHS Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in 2018. She is happy to come back home to the Upstate.

Dr. Briggs received his undergraduate degree at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Stephen is also a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine where his peers recognized him with election into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He is a 2014 graduate of the GHS Med-Peds residency program.  During his residency, Stephen distinguished himself as a highly dedicated, intelligent resident with clear vision for his education, who was always willing to help his fellow residents.

Dr. Crossby was born and raised in Easley, SC and obtained his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he was also a member of the Gold Humanism Society.  As a resident, Clay was known as a consummate team player and compassionate physician, whose calm confidence inspired those around him to give their very best.  He is the newest member of the Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, Wren practice.

Dr. Goldsmith is a 2008 graduate of the Mercer University School of Medicine and a 2012 graduate of the GHS Med-Peds program. Drew served as our Med-Peds Chief Resident in his 4th year and was the winner of the national Med-Peds Program Director’s Walter Tunnessen Award given to the 4th year Med-Peds resident nationwide who best demonstrates the values of dedicated patient care, excellent teaching, and patient advocacy. Drew now serves as one of our community Med-Peds faculty members and is the Medical Director of an ambulatory Med-Peds practice at Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in Wren, South Carolina.

Dr. Johnson graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2004. He then completed his Med-Peds residency here in Greenville in 2008. After graduation, Dr. Johnson served as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital for four years. Gregg now serves as one of our community Med-Peds faculty members while practicing outpatient Med-Peds at Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in Wren, South Carolina.  He is also very involved with global health trips with our Med-Peds residents.

Laura Johnson, MD is a graduate of Drury University in Springfield Missouri and did her medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She completed her Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency here at our program, Class of 2015. She served as president of the Prisma Health (previously Greenville Health System) Housestaff Senate and increased awareness of patient safety issues amongst all residents at GHS. After graduation, Laura worked as the director of the Prisma Health Family Medicine Teaching service from 2015-2018. She then worked in a global health program in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia. She served as Interim Vice Dean of medical affairs at the Myungsung Medical College. With support and guidance from the dean of the medical school, she created and precepted at medical student-run teaching clinic for local underserved populations integrating novel bedside outpatient teaching. She has moved back to Greenville, SC 2/2021 and we are so glad she is back! She currently works at the Heritage Internal Medicine-Pediatrics office at Simpsonville and her special interests include academic medicine, resident mentorship and global health.

Dr. Moreira received her undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and her MD from Mercer University School of Medicine. During her residency training, Dr. Moreira was a meticulous clinician and enthusiastic teacher with an interest in transitional care. Dr. Moreira serves as a Med-Peds provider and teacher at Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, our Med-Peds practice at Hillcrest Hospital in Simpsonville, SC.

Dr. O’Kelly is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Furman University and an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She graduated from the GHS Med-Peds program in 2011. Dr. O’Kelly also served as the president of the GHS House Staff in 2010-11 and as the GHS Pediatric Chief Resident in 2011-2012. Currently, she was an Associate Program Director for the GHS Pediatrics Residency until 2016.  She currently serves as the director of the Pediatric Simulation Center curriculum and works at our Med-Peds faculty practice at Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine in Simpsonville.

Dr. Wells received her Bachelor of Science, from the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL where she was a Presidential Scholar.  She then entered the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield as the Landecker Memorial Award recipient as an outstanding female student entering the SIU first year class.  During her residency, Sarah was known for being a very bright and thorough resident who was always willing to go the extra mile for her patients.  She was also known to go the extra thousand miles on occasion to serve some of the world’s neediest patients on Global Health trips to Brazil, Mexico, and beyond.    Dr. Wells has joined the Heritage Pediatrics and Internal Medicine primary care Med-Peds practice in Simpsonville.

Jonathan Davis attended medical school at the University of South Carolina – Columbia and spent his clinical third and fourth years at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He completed his combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Maine Medical Center. After residency, he worked for a community health center in Augusta, GA where he developed a passion for caring for underserved populations and academic medicine. He moved to Greenville, SC in 2020 and currently works as a Med-Peds Hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital. His special interests include medical student and resident education, diagnostic error, and clinical reasoning.

Dr. Dewald is originally from Smyrna, Georgia and attended the University of Georgia in Athens for her undergraduate education.  She then attended the Medical College of Georgia where she was a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and Alpha Upsilon Phi Service and Leadership Honor Society.  She was also Merck Manual Award and the Woo Memorial Award – for academic achievement and service.  Liz was known in our program for her extensive knowledge base, her strong work ethic, and for her infectious smile and sense of humor. Liz Dewald currently works as both a pediatric hospitalist at Anderson Medical Center and an adult medicine hospitalist at Greenville Memorial Hospital. At Anderson Medical Center, Liz will be working along side other med-peds graduates, Teresa Williams and Sen Ravindran.

Jonathan Garber, DO is a native of Virginia and attended medical school at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA. He completed her four year residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. He works full-time at Greer Memorial Hospital as a Med-peds hospitalist. His special interests include preventative medicine, nutrition, and point of care ultrasound.

Dr. Hindman graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2002, and finished his Med-Peds residency in Greenville in 2006, our program’s first graduating class. He was made a Greenville Health System (GHS) Leadership Fellow after undergoing an eight-month seminar designed to sculpt interprofessional leaders to support the transformation of healthcare delivery within GHS and one particular interest is Ethics. He completes Ethics consults at the Greenville Health System hospitals in addition to serving as a full time Greer Med-Peds Hospitalist. He is also director of Greer Memorial Hospital’s nursery and the co-director of the Greer Med-Peds Hospitalists Rotation with Sen Ravindran, our associate program director. His professional interests include ethics, cost-effective hospitalist medicine, and medical student and resident education.

Dr. Myers received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2008 where he was a Gold Humanism Honor Society recipient and completed the GHS Med-Peds program in 2012. During his residency training, Denny was as a dedicated clinician, patient advocate, and an enthusiastic role model and mentor for his fellow residents. Denny now serves as a Med-Peds hospitalist at Greer Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Suhrer graduated from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his Med-Peds training in 1986 at the St. Louis University affiliated Med-Peds program. He’s been practice over 30 years ranging from private practice in Med-Peds Private Practice (including daily inpatient rounds) from 1986-2000 in Russellville, KY and Aiken, SC to solely Med-Peds inpatient hospitalist since 2000. He joined the Greer Hospitalist group in 2007 and started part-time work as a physician advisor in 2016. As a physician advisor, he reviews charts and notes to assess appropriateness of admission, admission status and helps coordinate disposition with social work and the physician caring for the patient. His professional interests are improving processes that will aid providing high-quality, cost-effective hospitalist medicine and physician advising/faculty development.

Dr. Williams received her Bachelor of Science, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her Masters of Public Health from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health.  She also received her MD degree from UAB, where she graduated cum laude and was a member of both the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Society.  During her residency, Teresa served as our Med-Peds chief resident in her fourth year and also had the honor of serving as one of the two pediatric chief residents following graduation.  Teresa is very interested in global health and spent a month at Kijabe Hospital in Kenya during her third year of residency and has long term plans to practice medicine in Africa.  She currently works as both a pediatric hospitalist at Anderson Medical Center and an adult medicine hospitalist at Greenville Memorial Hospital
