In 2012, The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville opened its doors on our campus. The UofSC School of Medicine Greenville has further enhanced the educational mission of our health system and has provided increasing opportunities for teaching and mentorship for our faculty and residents.

In Greenville, we are very fortunate to have a cohesive, supportive and hard-working group of residents devoted to patient care and each other. Our med-peds residents fit seamlessly within two excellent categorical programs while still retaining their own unique identity.

Categorical Programs

Our Med-Peds residents are fortunate to work with two excellent and well-balanced categorical programs.

Graduates from each program routinely secure competitive fellowship and hospitalist opportunities. Our Med-Peds residents feel fully integrated into each categorical program while maintaining their own unique identity

Our busy Children’s Hospital Service is housed in the same building as our internal medicine wards, which greatly simplifies the Med-Peds residents’ experience. Med-Peds Hospitalist Program

Prisma Health has its own eight physician Med-Peds hospitalist group at Prisma Health Greer Memorial Hospital, a new 82-bed satellite facility located just 14 miles from downtown Greenville.

Our Med-Peds hospitalists provide inpatient care to patients of all ages in this beautiful and family-centered facility.

From delivery coverage for newborn resuscitation and routine infant care to adult inpatient or ICU care, our Med-Peds hospitalists provide a wide variety of inpatient services to the residents of Greer and surrounding areas.

Small hospitals throughout the country are increasingly interested in Med-Peds hospitalists, and this hospitalist experience provides an outstanding opportunity for Med-Peds residents interested in combining internal medicine and pediatrics in their eventual careers. Few residency programs offer a rotation such as this one that demonstrates the real-life workings of a dedicated Med-Peds hospitalist program.

This rotation is a requirement for all fourth year Med-Peds residents at Prisma Health, and is also available as an elective in the third year for those considering a career in hospital medicine. Senior residents rotating at Greer Memorial Hospital will learn about building a career in Med-Peds, from billing to quality care initiatives to procedures such as stress tests and central line placement.

The Greer Hospitalist rotation is a fantastic experience that lets our senior residents experience the career of Med-Peds Hospitalist firsthand and has led to exciting career opportunities locally and nationally for our graduates.

Pediatric to Adult Care Transition

Med-Peds physicians have an essential role to play in facilitating timely, effective transitions from pediatric to adult care. The Prisma Health Med-Peds program provides our residents with the knowledge, skills, and experience to help young adults transition to the adult health care setting. Our Med-Peds residents receive transitional care training through clinical experiences, workshops and didactics throughout the four years of training.

Residency Program Director Dr. Sarah Hinton leads our health system as the chair for the Pediatric to Adult Care Transition Committee. She has received two grants from the American Academy of Pediatrics to improve pediatric to adult care transition for individuals with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays across South Carolina.

Additionally, our resident continuity clinic sites at the Center for Pediatric Medicine and the Internal Medicine Clinic have played an integral role in piloting pediatric to adult care transition projects, which have been later implemented across the health system.

Med-Peds residents’ efforts have also resulted in two quality improvement poster presentations at the annual meeting of the South Carolina chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Pediatric to Adult Care Initiatives:

In 2015, Sen Ravindran, our Associate Program Director and a 2015 graduate of our program and Jill Sullivan, a 2015 graduate, planned a Transitional Care Conference, attended by students and physicians from across the country.
In 2016, we recognized that despite having a nationally recognized asthma management program in our pediatric resident clinic, we did not have a formal process for transitioning our asthma patients to adult care. Utilizing the Six Core Elements from Got Transition, we developed an office policy regarding transition and transfer to adult care.
We then created a transition readiness assessment tool to be administered at least yearly during asthma maintenance visits. A clinic quality improvement project showed that our EHR tool’s utilization resulted in improved transition planning and improved outcomes in our clinic asthma population. We then broadened the use of our EHR tool for use for our entire clinic population for use during routine preventive wellness visits. Following this tool’s successful utilization in our residency clinic population, the tool was encouraged for use across the entire pediatric population in our region for our health system for both general pediatric practices and subspecialty practices.

Continued work on transition has resulted in creating a new referral type in the electronic health record, allowing patients and providers to identify an appropriate fit for an adult provider or practice.

Additionally, recognizing that there is sometimes confusion and difficulty managing patients near the age of transition in the emergency and inpatient settings, a proposal for an EHR dashboard has been created. This dashboard would help highlight the patient’s transition plan and important need-to-know information.

There are many opportunities for resident involvement in quality improvement projects involving transitional care in our system.

Global Health Experiences

Given our unique training, interested Med-Peds physicians are well-positioned to provide a wide range of health care services to the world’s populations that are most in need. Med-Peds residents at Prisma Health have undertaken a variety of international trips to provide medical care and relief around the world.

Prisma Health has been very supportive of global health trips, and residents may participate in as many as two month-long trips during residency.
