Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Greenville - Ambulatory Education

One unique strength of our program is the availability of a wide variety of outpatient educational experiences for our Med-Peds residents.

Continuity Clinic Features

  • Med-Peds residents currently work in both Internal Medicine and Pediatric resident clinics for their continuity clinic days.
  • On a typical continuity clinic day, our Med-Peds residents will see both adults and children in the same day, but in separate clinic sites.  For instance, they may have their adult Internal Medicine Clinic in the morning, and then go to the Center for Pediatric Medicine in the afternoon, or vice versa.
  • Med-Peds residents are encouraged to transition patients 18 or older to their adult clinics whenever possible.
  • Both clinics use the same electronic medical record system.
  • Our residents are all provided with their own wireless PC tablet for electronic charting.
  • Our residents are encouraged to transition their older pediatric patients to their medicine clinic where possible.

Participating in both the medicine and pediatric clinics enables the Med-Peds residents to feel integrated into both programs and provides them with opportunities to learn from categorically trained attendings as well as Med-Peds faculty. This framework also ensures that they have no trouble meeting the ACGME guidelines for a balance of adults and children and minimum numbers of patients.

Our hospital and program leaders also recognize the value of a combined Med-Peds ambulatory experience. We are excited to announce the recent opening of the Heritage Med-Peds ambulatory faculty practices.

Med-Peds Ambulatory Rotation

New in 2015, we created a required Med-Peds Ambulatory Rotation for our interns that gives them the opportunity to meet and work with Med-Peds practitioners in a variety of settings in the Greenville community.  As part of this rotation, our interns spend an entire month rotating with all the different Med-Peds practices in our community.

Rotation Goals:

  • Enable our residents to experience the care of adults and children together in a variety of acute, primary and specialty care settings
  • Learn about the effective transition of care from pediatric to adult settings
  • Meet potential mentors and role models in Med-Peds

This rotation incorporates experiences with Med-Peds faculty at three different Med-Peds practices in our community, urgent care with our MD360 program and subspecialty Med-Peds experiences. In addition, monthlong electives at any of these practices are available for our upper-level residents interested in primary care Med-Peds.

Internal Medicine Ambulatory Experiences

Our residents’ primary adult medicine ambulatory experience occurs at the Internal Medicine Clinic (IMC). This busy resident practice provides a wide variety of medically complex adult patients and is conveniently located within the Greenville Memorial Hospital complex. Patients whom the residents have treated in the hospital will often follow up in this practice. This practice is staffed with two full-time social workers, clinical pharmacists and diabetic counselors. Teaching at this site is conducted by highly qualified clinician educators in internal medicine and Med-Peds.

Our Med-Peds residents also have ample opportunity for ambulatory medicine experiences in a variety of other settings during their elective months. Our program provides educational experiences in all the major medical specialties and general internal medicine in satellite offices, medical center clinics and private practice settings. Many of our physicians’ ambulatory practices are housed in the state-of-the-art Patewood Medical Office Buildings.

Pediatrics Ambulatory Experiences

Our Med-Peds residents’ primary pediatric medicine ambulatory experience occurs at the Center for Pediatric Medicine. This very busy ambulatory pediatric practice is located directly across the street from Children’s Hospital in the Cross Creek Medical Complex. The Center for Pediatric Medicine provides residents with valuable experience in managing a wide variety of childhood problems.

  • Patient visits include both well and acutely ill children.
  • Residents provide longitudinal comprehensive care in weekly continuity clinics as well as in month-long ambulatory blocks.
  • There is a strong emphasis on treating both medical and psychosocial needs of the child and family unit.
  • Excellent support from Nursing, Social Services, and Child Life departments contribute to a family-centered care philosophy.
  • Pediatric specialty care education in a variety of other ambulatory settings.

  • Med-Peds residents currently spend one month in the Pediatric Emergency Center, a freestanding emergency room staffed 24 hours a day by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and sees over 23,000 yearly visits.
