Message from the director
As teachers in one of the fastest-growing fields in medicine, we train the next generation of physicians to provide the full spectrum of neurological services and to be at the forefront of patient care, teaching, providing and discovering new treatments for neurological diseases.
Residents in our program also have the opportunity to work at the first Stroke Center in the Midlands, a multidisciplinary program at Prisma Health Richland Hospital that provides life-saving care using state-of-the-art technology and the latest advancements in stroke diagnosis and treatment.
We have faculty with vast experience and expertise in neurology and specific representations in epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, headache, stroke, movement disorders, memory and sleep disorders. We work closely with our colleagues in the neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry and neuro-radiology departments to provide the most comprehensive care to patients with neurological diseases.
The aim of the first year of neurology training involves a comprehensive clinical experience in the areas of internal medicine, subspecialties of internal medicine, family medicine and emergency medicine. A first exposure to neurology will also occur. First-year residents provide medical care for patients within the confines of the team, but will gain skill and develop confidence in independent decision making related to medical issues (under supervision of senior residents and supervisory faculty).
In their second year, trainees are provided comprehensive clinical experience in adult neurology for both outpatient and inpatient diagnosis and management. This training will consist of 13 blocks of clinical rotations in adult neurology at Richland Hospital, our Prisma Health Neurology outpatient clinic, and the VA Columbia South Carolina Health Care System. These rotations contain both adult inpatient and an integrated outpatient exposure.
PGY3 residents have an exceptional opportunity to increase their depth of understanding of the field of neurology, psychiatry and pediatric diagnosis and management to lay the foundation for their future development. The clinical experience during this year is spent at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, Prisma Health Baptist Hospital, Prisma Health Children's Hospital, and the Neurology Outpatient Specialty Clinic at USC School of Medicine, and the Dorn VA Medical Center. All the while, residents will experience increasing levels of responsibility for patient care and teaching as they attain supervisory roles for the trainees at earlier levels of training.
In the fourth year, residents develop an extensive knowledge base in neurology and the neurosciences that are both broad and deep. They will have developed competence at using the medical literature to guide patient care decisions (evidence-based medicine). The resident will demonstrate competence in all facets of the care provided to neurology patients and will demonstrate that they are prepared for practice after graduation. PGY4 residents also assume an ascending level of responsibility for teaching. The remainder of the PGY4 year allows extensive elective options for mentoring, protected time for formulating a career path, intensive literature study, and a clinical or basic neuroscience research project.
