Neurology Residency Columbia - How to Apply

Application information

Candidates should complete the application process through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Submission of applications will begin in September of each year and applications are accepted through the end of December. Interviews are conducted from mid-November through the end of January. You should provide the following in place when applying:

  • Transcript of National Board scores (Step 1 and 2) / USMLE scores, average score of 225.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • Letter from the dean.
  • Personal statement.
  • Applicants must be no more than one year postgraduate.
Our program offers:
  • PGY 1 residents: 6 categorical.
  • PGY 2–4 residents: 6 per year.
  • Total complement: 24.
The interview process at a glance:
  • The residency selection committee reviews preliminary data and extends invitations to selected candidates to visit the Prisma Health Richland Hospital and University of South Carolina campuses for a personal interview.
  • Applicants are scheduled to interview in person for the upcoming year.
  • The visit will include an opportunity to have dinner with a resident host the evening before the interview.
  • The interview day will include:
    • Attending an overview with the program director.
    • Observing the morning report.
    • Interview with the chair, director and four other faculty members.
    • Lunch with residents and faculty.
    • Attending neurology grand rounds.
    • Ending tour and wrap-up session with program administrator.

Acceptance into the program requires graduation from a medical school approved by the Council on Graduate Medical Education of the AMA. We welcome foreign graduates to apply; however, foreign graduates must have standard ECFMG certificates and be eligible for permanent immigrant status as well as for licensure in South Carolina. IMGs must be willing to come on J-1 Visa status. First-year appointments are made through the matching plan of the National Resident Matching Program. All applications and interviews will be completed in time to allow both parties to meet NRMP deadlines.
