Neurology Residency Greer - Director's Welcome

Thank you for your interest in our program.  I speak for our entire team in saying that we are very excited about our residency program and it is my pleasure to welcome you as a promising neurology resident.  We are a new Neurology Residency Program, having received initial ACGME accreditation in April 2019 as a 4-year categorical program with 6 residents per year.  We successfully filled all 6 residency spots in the March 2020 Match and happily welcomed our Legacy Class in July 2020.  Ultimately, any ACGME accredited program will produce results but what sets our program apart is the people and culture of the program.  So, let me tell you a little about our program, our people, and our community.

Our program balances inpatient and outpatient experiences in a way that allows all PGY 2 residents to get exposure to the breadth of neurologic subspecialties early in training.  We feel this exposure is important so our residents can decide on future career paths with an informed background.  The PGY 3 curriculum builds upon the foundations of neurology laid in PGY 2 by delving deeper into the neurologic subspecialties.  Finally, PGY 4 residents get to develop their own curriculum with 16 weeks of elective time and the goal of transitioning to independent practice as a Neurologist.  Our didactic series is created to complement our clinic curriculum with a variety of noon conferences and protected ½ day a week conferences series.  Please check our curriculum page for more details.

As a new program, we had the unique opportunity to create a well-rounded curriculum and learn from the best parts of the programs in which our faculty trained.  With over 20 ABPN board certified neurologists, we put value in keeping our faculty to resident ratios low for more direct clinical education opportunities.  We recognize the importance in wellness and feel that it is not just about restricting work hours, but also about ensuring that the work environment is safe, fun, and centered around education.  Our team is enthusiastic and eager to teach and provide quality neurologic care.  This excitement lends to a great work environment and ultimately good wellbeing.  We also incorporate fun team building and social activities into our wellness curriculum as well as support for our residents through a robust mentorship program.  Our clinical and nonclinical team members come from a diverse background but one thing we all have in common is kindness.  We believe that kindness is a quality that cannot be taught and is essential for good teamwork.  By emphasizing kindness, we have built a program where everyone looks out for each other so that we as a team can look out for our community.

Our community is amazing and a big part of why I, and many of our faculty, settled here.  As a faux foodie, I was pleasantly surprised to find the diversity of flavors in the region rivals cities like my previous home of Austin, TX.  From local Farmer’s Market to the BMW Performance Center and performing arts like the Broadway Series at the Peace Center, I have found everything I love to do right here in the Upstate.  And though I’m not as much of an outdoor enthusiast as our chair, Dr. Fredy Revilla, I have fallen in love with the beauty and charm of sites such as the Swamp Rabbit Trail, Lake Conestee Nature Preserve, and Table Rock State Park.  Best of all is that southern hospitality doesn’t even begin to describe the warmth and kindness of the community who welcomes you here.  Please check out our Life in Upstate page for more information on this wonderful area that draws so many people in and holds them here to enjoy all it has to offer.

It is a privilege for me to serve as the Neurology Program Director and work with such a fantastic team.  I am proud of our kind, compassionate, and hard-working residents who have set a high standard for our program.  We invite you to learn more about our program and residents.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any additional questions you may have.
