OB/GYN Residency Columbia - Chief Residents' Welcome

Thank you for your interest in our program at Prisma Health.

We hope that this brief overview of our residency program gives you some information about our program located in Columbia, South Carolina. Our program has been well-established in the community and is responsible for educating many of our area's OB/GYNs. We aim to train quality, well-rounded physicians, whether or not they decide to pursue general practice or subspecialty training.

Prisma Health Richland Hospital serves as the perinatal referral center for a 16-county region and provides excellent training in high risk obstetrics as well as the opportunity to care for some of the state’s most critical patients. Our obstetrics curriculum is rigorous and includes rotations on labor and delivery, ultrasound, and high-risk obstetrics. Likewise, our gynecology program trains residents to care for women from adolescence to beyond menopause with rotations in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, and family planning.

Research opportunities are easy to obtain and all residents are required to present their self-guided, faculty mentored research during their third year. We are fortunate to have a Women’s Health Research dedicated coordinator and host the annual multidisciplinary Women’s Health Research Forum. Additionally, our residents have presented at several conferences including North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and South Carolina Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.

Located in the capital of South Carolina, our program has unique opportunities for advocacy and taking an active role in women’s health policy. Many of our residents have been present for important hearings in both the Senate and House concerning our patients’ healthcare.

Our residents and faculty are diverse in their cultural and geographic origins providing us with different perspectives on patient care. We enjoy working together and make time for resident wellness by enjoying some of the many local activities. Whether you’re an SEC football fan, outdoor enthusiast or beer aficionado, there is something in the area for you to enjoy.

I encourage you to explore the Prisma Health graduate medical education website so you can see all the benefits we enjoy. In addition to our GME benefits, our department provides all our necessary textbooks and a yearly stipend to attend a conference if desired.

We have truly enjoyed our time at Prisma Health and it is an outstanding place to live and work. We look forward to meeting you during interview season. Please reach out with any questions that you may have about our program!
