Carol Alan, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist with Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. She received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore MD, and completed her residency training at  Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She serves as an attending laborist physician in the labor and delivery and surgery units at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.

Elizabeth Nodelman, MD, provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care at Prisma Health in northeast Columbia, South Carolina. A native of Myrtle Beach, she completed her undergraduate degree at Wofford College in Spartanburg and received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She completed her residency training at TriHealth in Cincinnati and is happy to have returned to South Carolina to practice. Dr. Nodelman is certified in robotic and laparoscopic surgical procedures.

James Cook, MD, received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed his residency at Michigan State University/Sparrow and joined the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia in 2012. He serves as the medical student clerkship director.

Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Cook provided gynecologic care at the Student Health Center at the University of South Carolina. He previously served as a medical officer and director of medical education at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Wendy Hartshorne, MD, received her medical degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She spent seven years in private practice at Southwest OBGYN Associates in Houston, and joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2008.

Patricia Seal, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist with Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. She received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and completed her residency in OB/GYN at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.

Dr. Seal is the director of the Ryan Residency Program, which focuses on national initiatives to integrate and enhance family planning training for obstetrics and gynecology residents, and she serves as the medical director of the residency practice outpatient clinic.

Kerry Sims, MD, received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and completed her residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. She provides comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care at her practice and serves as an attending physician in the labor and delivery and surgery units at Prisma Health Richland Hospital.

Dr. Sims previously served as director of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia OB/GYN medical student clerkship. She was named director of the OB/GYN residency program in 2014 and in March of 2020 was named vice chair of education. Her areas of interest include ultrasound, prenatal education, breastfeeding and resident education.

Department Chair

Berry Campbell, MD, is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist for Prisma Health and faculty member at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he also completed his residency and a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine. Prior to joining Prisma Health, Dr. Campbell served as director of genetics and prenatal diagnosis at the University of Kentucky. His special interests include prenatal genetics and diagnostic testing, as well as management of diabetes in pregnancy.

Anthony Gregg, MD, is a fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine OB/GYN physician and currently serves as director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division at Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. Thomas Fleming Mattox, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist with Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and completed his residency at Louisiana State University School of Medicine/Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He was one of the first board-certified fellowship-trained urogynecologists in South Carolina, and has been affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia since 1997.

Dr. Mattox specializes in pelvic floor disorders including urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and bladder pain, and is an accomplished surgeon, performing over 1000 minimally invasive laparoscopic pelvic suspensions and more than 2000 minimally invasive sub-urethral slings. He is an expert in treating vaginal mesh complications, is widely published and is a nationally recognized speaker. He has been awarded the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology award for excellence in teaching.

Sumit Saraf, MD, is a fellowship-trained OB/GYN physician with Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. He received his medical degree from Terna Medical College in Mumbai, India, and completed his residency and fellowship at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Dr. Saraf specializes in minimally invasive surgery for benign gynecologic patients, using the most advanced surgical tools. He believes in individualized, comprehensive multidisciplinary care, in the most informed, safest and patient-focused manner.

Judith Thompson Burgis, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist with Prisma Health in Columbia, South Carolina. She received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia and completed her residency at Prisma Health Richland Hospital. She served in private practice in Columbia for eleven years before her faculty appointment in 2004, and was named chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2011 until 2019.

Dr. Burgis' areas of interest include vulvar disorders, pediatric and adolescent gynecology, and maternal morbidity and mortality. She continues to maintain a limited practice in pediatric and adolescent gynecology at the residency practice outpatient clinic. She is an active member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology and the South Atlantic Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
